They created the basis of the Christian religion on the fact that Christ died for our sins so that people would no longer be afraid to die. Now they could rest assured that they would go to a heaven because Christ had opened the gates for them. So, they could be happy about accepting death.
Up until then all religions were trying to keep people from trying to kill themselves and keep them wanting to live in such a scary, cruel world.
