if you are looking for an at home remedy, we recommend a solution made up of 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 vinegar.. it works great and is cheaper than ear cleaning solution (which if bought at a pet store could actually cause more problems if there is yeast or bacteria in the ear!!)

Get some sort of ear cleaner at a pet store, (or better yet, from your vet!) You can get liquid or wipes. If your dog's ears aren't too dirty, the wipes will be fine. Just use your finger in the wipe to wipe out the dirt. If you use the liquid, squirt a little into each ear and squish the ear around. Then take your finger in a thin, soft towel/rag/paper towel of some sort and clean the dirt where you can. You really can't dig far enough with your finger to hurt them, but you CAN dig so far that you can hurt them with a q-tip - so be careful if you decide you need to use a q-tip. The dog will shake the rest of the cleaner and goop out of their own ears once you are finished.

If the ears are gunked-up with a thick layer of dirt, you should squirt in the cleaner, smush, then let your dog shake it out for a while. It's better to let the dog shake out the thick crud than for you to cram it further into the canal. After this, you can wipe out what you can reach. Just be sure to wipe outward.

It would be a good idea to ask your vet or groomer to show you how to clean your dog's ears. If they ever need a "deep down" cleaning, you should have your vet do it, as they know how to dig in without puncturing anything important!

I hope that helps!

Get ear cleaner from the vet. Let it sit in the dogs ear for 30 min or so its ok if he shakes his head. Then get a q-tip and clean the outside of the ear I only go in as far as I can see don't want to rupture a ear drum.

Get Ear Cleaning solution at the pet store, put it on a cotton ball (saturate) then put in dogs ear. Smoosh the ear around. Take cotton ball out and she will shake her head to get the rest of the solution out.

they do sell ear solution at the pet store, but i just use those cotton material discs that they sell in the makup aisle ( not cotton balls) lightly put baby oil on the cotton, not too much cause it can cause a yeast infection in the ears if used in excess, use your pointer finger in canal, with your thumb behind your dogs ear, in a circular motion with you pointer finger and cotton disc move it in a inward clockwise direction, than out. then i use q-tips for the outer ear, no oil cause the ear has already been coated by the cotton disc. the oil softens any hard dirt so it will be easily removed without causing irritation, just remember to be gentle, this is a sensitive area with a lot of nerves in it. i have been using this method for years on all my dogs, it works wonderful , from pups to adults. i have been breeding scottish terriers for 10 years and never had a problem. but if your dog has an ear infection use the same techneice with the cotton disc but with ear solution they sell at pet store followed by ear drops prescribed by vet. do you know how to insert drops for ear infections to make sure it gets to inner ear?
