I'm tired of hearing about charities based on religion. There are plenty of us Agnostics or Atheist who are every bit as charitable and compassionate as any christian claims to be. I give to good causes and volunteer both in my children's school and community all of the time. I don't want to preach my position, I just want to be another voice in a largely misunderstood and unheard community. Who's in? Email me if you're serious.

Backdraft...those all have religious roots I didn't say they only support religious causes or they come from a church.

You're right. Religion-affiliated charities have a definite impact on what types of sexual health information and care are given to women in developing countries. That's the biggest reason I refuse to give to Catholic charities, who perpetuate the treatment of women as second-class citizens around the world. And many of them, of course, have the secondary goal of "converting" those to whom they give their services.

I mostly give to the Red Cross. But I would be interested in giving to such a non-religious or agnostic/humanist-affiliated organization.

I understand your position, I just don't care what the background of the beliefs at a charity might be.

I care about what they do for people, and how effective they are at controlling administrative costs. The gentleman quoting statistics about "religious charities" clearly is making up numbers, because out of control administrative costs can be found in non-profits of all sorts, shapes and sizes.

I use Charity Navigator and the NCCS (National Center for Charitable Statistics) to research organizations, and support the ones that really help real people. I really don't care if they are Christians, Muslims, Mormons, Agnostics or anything else.

I agree with you 100%. Donations under the guise of religion really don't go far. Numerous statistical studies have indicated that. The problem that I have is that 65 to 85 percent of Christian donations go to overhead, and not to those who truly need it. The commercialization of the Church is ridiculous. I went to my sisters church one time and could hardly keep a straight face. They had a coffee bar (with Starbucks prices) and a gift/book shop in the Church!! Hilarious... I call it Christmart. As far as starting an Agnostic charity, why do that? Just have a charity that doesn't operate under any religion... or lack thereof.
