Welcome to the hidden world of day care. This child may be unable to calm himself to fall asleep, and this child desparately needs to nap. Or, the teacher needs a break from this kid and naptime is the only peace she gets during her day. She may be overstressed, and maybe the parents are pressuring her to make sure he gets a nap. Or worse, the management pressures her to make sure the kids keep quiet. State laws require preschoolers to rest for an hour and a half. What do you do with a 4 yr old that doesn't want to nap, and he 'infects' the other kids with the "if he doesn't have to sleep, neither do I" mentality. And then what do you do when the afternoon teacher squacks at you for the over-tired boy that you didn't get to fall asleep. There is no excuse, but across America many day care teachers are holding down little kids to get them to fall asleep. It doesn't make it right. But......... what is the answer? Parents are too busy at work to check out the day care center during 'non-parent' times, 'teachers' are underpaid and undereducated, staff turnover is very high, 'teachers' with little training and experience are dumped (like the kids) in a classroom with little support. Imagine, one day starting your new job taking care of not one child, but 12 kids. You are to feed them, help with the potty time, teach them, feed them again, put 12 kids down for nap,......... many teachers are doing this by themselves (and many are just barely out of high school).

I am in no place to judge if it is abuse or not. But the day care should have policies regarding this . If you are uncomfortable with it go tell the director/supervisor and ask that you stay anonymous (if you want to remain anon) .
This is a serious issue and should be dealt with seriously.
There is a Chance that the teacher may be doing this innocently .So it is really better to just talk to authorities rather than to people who are not directly involved, this may cause confusion and even bias.
Good luck

working with very young children is one of the most difficult jobs there is.. a teach needs to set the classroom rules... and nap time maybe one of those. unless this teacher has a history of odd or questionable behavior, I would give the benifit of the doubt.
I dont believe that under normal circumstances this is not abuse.
but an effort to help the child comply with the nap time rules..
and I think this teacher went beyound what is expected for the benifit of this youngster

lays with the child or lays on a child... it's abuse. I used to be a teacher.. We are not to even pat the kids on the head or touch their shoulders to get their attention.

If she is putting her weight on top of the child, then that is not safe. If he is struggling to get out from under her, that is abuse, both physical and psychological.
What does your principal say?
