Sure, if you hit him directly in the eye and the bullet was able to destroy the brain. However, the chances of you dying are much higher then the chances of him dying, as his eye is only a very very small part of him.

There was a story in Guns & Ammo magazine many years ago in which the author Mel Tappan told the story of a full grown circus Elephant that was accidentally shot and killed. The weapon was a short barrel handgun, the bullet was a .22 short..
Yes it could happen, is it reasonable or likely that you "would" kill an Elephant with a 9mm handgun.. NO
A slightly better choice for Elephant would be the 460Wby Mag

No unless it is the world's luckiest eye shot, with one of the world's most powerful 9mm loads and a sport barrel.
Personally I wouldn't even trust my beloved 3 1/2" 12 guage to take down a bull elephant, and wouldn't trust anything less than .300 Magnum either. Only pistol would be a .500 S&W. A T/C Contender or Encore style would do, but it is really a stretch to call those "pistols."

I remember reading a news article about an Alaskan Brown Bear being killed by a single shot from a 9mm handgun. The article noted that the round used was FMJ. I believe NATO 9X19mm FMJ loads possess deep penetration capability. Whether or not such a round could penetrate an elephant and reach it's central nervous system is unknown to me. But if it is possible, then shot placement would then be the determinative factor.

Unless you have an unlimited supply of 9mm rounds and can fire at your target from a distance of 1 mile, then yes, you maybe able to bring it down, if it were sick and already dying.
You'll need a larger caliber like a .308 or even better yet, either the .50 cal or five/seven round to bring it down.

That would be a death wish! I wouldn't attempt that even if you had something that was full auto it would not be able to penetrate that thickness of flesh and bone. a 50 bmg on the other hand might do the trick. Really aren't they an endangered species of animal.

No. The only handgun I would remotely want to weild against an elephant is the S&W 500. Even then you are still risking your life

Perhaps if the 9mm round was forged in the fires of Mordor and only Frodo could wield it...no, a 9mm would probably just break the skin and do little damage.

Is it possible? Sure. A bullet in the eye or down the ear canal is quite likely to score a kill. Are you gonna catch me being the crazy guy who proves it? No chance.

yPea if you walk up to it. Climb up the wild beast. Lift the ear. Put the gun in its ear cannal, and then pull the trigger. You might kill it, but have fun trying to climb up there
