Say something to the effect that if they could or would learn more words, they would begin to understand how stupid they are. Well, I guess that is too long. Maybe shout out something like No I not a n....g...r...but you have proved yourself to be a ignoramous (or insert something to your desire) without a doubt. Practice giving them a look of superiority ahead of time to follow your statement.
The best of all is to be in such a good state of mind that you would get a humongous laugh at the ignorant remark. I know, we don't always feel that way but meditating daily can help one to feel their uniqueness and wisdom. ...only a suggestion mind you...I can only imagine how awful that can of remark can feel. But remember this (it has always helped me): the best revenge is looking good.
(In short forget the pain and take on a feel good attitude about yourself...wonderful stuff made by God/dess.)

You are not the one who has anything to be embarrassed about. People who throw around such words are the ones who should be ashamed.

I wouldn’t assume that people enjoy your pain. Perhaps they are trying to hide their own discomfort by smiling and making light of it. Sometimes people laugh at something or smile because they simply don’t know what the appropriate reaction should be.

Try not to let it bother you. A lot of younger people use the word recklessly and without any thought to offend anybody. I don’t know that they even understand the historical connotations.

No name can define who you are, anyway.

Let it go. The word shouldn’t be used, period, but when it is, don’t let it get to you. .

If I would hear slander like that , I would not be looking at you, but at the nasty person who called you/us that. I would be tempted to put that person in his/her place. Too bad there are so many heartless people out there. Be proud of who you are and don't let this type of a person get you down. Be strong and walk on.

Honey you shouldn't be embarrassed at all. the idiot that calls you that is making a fool of himself.

If I was you I would just roll my eyes and ignore it. The person doing the name calling is the one that should be embarrassed.
