Incense sticks often create a sense of peace and well-being thanks to the aromatherapeutic properties. It does not have to be used spiritually, but it can definitely aid in spiritual activities, particularly meditation. It is mostly harmless provided you don't let it fall out of the incense holder onto something flammable. I'm not so sure I would leave it unattended for a long time in a room, but for a few short minutes, it probably won't cause any harm.

Many times it is used by people who want to ward off evil spirits. Incense is also use to mask the smell of Mary Jane. Incense was used mainly for that reason. I think burning a lot of incense can cause lung problems and I would not leave it un-attended.

In China incense sticks are often burned outside a family's apartment door. This is believed to protect the family from evil spirits. It is also believed to be a way to send a prayer (or prayers) to the gods and to one's ancestors especially when burned at a Temple.

I don't burn them, but I had a girlfriend who liked the smell. Nothing more.

I guess it's easier than taking out the trash?
