You did not give very much information to work with. There are several questions that I have. 1) How old is the dog? 2)How long have you had the dog? 3)Is the dog and indoor dog or an outdoor dog? 4) Exactally what is the dog barking at? 5) Are you gone alot - so that the dog has seperation anxiety?
I would very much consider taking the dog to a trainer. A trainer could help you figure out exactly why the dog is barking first off. They could give you suggestions as to exactlly what the problem is.
Another suggestion might be to get a specially designed chew toy inwhich you can insert treats into the toy and this will keep the dog occupied and quiet. While the dog is quiet, you might tell the dog "good dog for being quiet"
There are ways to help the dog realize that the barking is annoying you. I would start with a simple "hush" when the dog starts barking. If the dog is quiet for a little while, praise your dog and tell the dog "Good dog for "hushing"
Most dogs want to please their owners and with some training will get the idea. Another idea is to get a spray bottle and fill it with water and put about a cup or so of vinegar in the water. Turn the nozzle till it makes a straight line of water. When the dog starts barking, VERY QUICKLY shoot one or possible two shots of the vinegar/water at the dog and tell the dog "hush" The water will not taste good and the dog will soon learn to associate the vinegar/water with the barking. Agian , when the dog quits barking - make sure that you praise the dog.
If this doesn't work, there are anti-barking collars at the pet stores. BUT, I WOULD DO SOME INVESTIGATION BEFORE INVESTING IN ONE.
If you give the dog to someone else or the pound, you are only passing along the problem to someone else. You need to be upfront and honest about why you are getting rid of the dog.
Hopefully one of these ideas will work and help you with your dog.
My dogs are outside dogs and when they start barking too much - I usually just tap hard on a window and they stop. Sometimes I open the door and have to tell them "hush" and that is all it takes. BUT I STARTED THIS WHEN THEY WERE VERY YOUNG AND ALWAYS PRAISED THM AFTERWARDS.
