I'm a southern girl now so it's black eyed peas and fried potatoes with onions for us. So much starch!!! I have never heard of collard greens for luck, will spinach work?

In the south, we eat black eyed peas and collard greens (representing money). I have been doing this most of my life...come to think of it, I am still poor...hmmm...

Here, it's black eyed peas. I used to (still do, actually) hate them, and my mom always hid one of them in my mashed potatoes to be sure that I would eat it for luck when I was growing up.

The Pennsylvania German tradition is to eat pork on New Year's Day - never eat chicken, because pigs root out food going forward and chickens scratch backward.

My Italian relatives always insisted on shrimp on New Year's.
