Actually, maid of honor is any woman who has never been married. Matron is the term used to describe any woman who is, or has been, married. So, if a woman is divorced or widowed she would be a matron.

The matron of honor is generally a close female friend or relative who is married..She helps the bride with her wedding making sure all is in order and on time..She has more responsibilities than anyone..Generally she is also the one who throw the bridal shower..

A Maid of Honour is a single woman; a Matron of Honour is a married woman. You only have one in the position, but the name used is because of her marital status.
