So I have this friend that no matter how much or little she drinks she ALWAYS gets a massive hangover the next day. I tell her to try taking Advil or something like I do before I start drinking and eat while I drink but it never works for her. Does anyone have any ideas about how to try to prevent a severe hangover (other than a simple don't drink answer) or how to make it not feel so bad when she does get it? With New Years coming up I can tell its going to be a long holiday for her! Thanks! And no stupid answers please.

Ok so I am one who suffers from hangovers as well and I can tell you...they take the fun out of drinking! But she could try taking down a glass of water for every drink she has. Like a glass of wine, then a glass of water. Usually hangovers come from dehydration or if she drinks cocktails with lots of sugar in them... I read somewhere that having ltos of sugar in your system slows down your ability to filter out all the alcohol.

Worst case scenario and she can't get rid of the hangovers... my personal cure is greasy food. Hasbrowns, burgers, pretty much anythinhg with grease helps absorb the remaining alcohol.

I have been a bartender for over 18 years and have heard cures and preventives so we'll start there. If you drink a glass of milk or eat a baked potato before going out to drink it will help stop a hangover. If you drink to much you have a few more choices, you can do the desperate measure and drink enough water to cause you to vomit then follow it up with a good dose of Advil and alot of sleep. If you are still dizzy try leaving one foot on the floor while you lay on your bed while sleeping. And if it is really, really bad a glass of tomato juice with a dash of Tabasco, salt, pepper and a raw egg blended, shaken or stirred may help. Or you could you a last resort of hair of the dog.I'll let you look up the meaning of that one.

I space my drinks, allowing one alcoholic drink an hour and downing a large glass of water for each drink. The number one contributor to hangovers is dehydration. Also, I get on the outside of some complex carbohydrates, such as cheesy nachos, before I start drinking. If their is food in your tummy, this will slow the absorption of alcohol.

Also, I have heard that eating a banana a few hours before you start drinking helps. Bananas are rich in some vitamin (I forget which) that stymies hangover symptoms.

Drink plenty of water afterwards.

If you do get sick, a mug of warm milk and some toast helps. Soak the toast in the milk to help with digestion.

Have her take an advil before she drinks. Then tell her to eat bread as she drinks. It helps to soak up the alcohol and lessen the possibilities of getting a hangover.

Also, don't drink too fast and drink lots of water in between.

Happy New Year!

First start out on a full stomach...something greasy and heavy in starch. A double cheese burger and fries always works for me. Then drink a glass of water with every drink. You pee alot, but its worth it. Before you go to bed eat something - eat at Waffle House on the way home and have a big glass of water before you go to bed.

Eat a big meal before drinking. Stick with one kind of alcohol. Take two ibuprofen and drink two full glasses of water before bed, and lastly get pleanty of sleep.

Water + carbs! Seriously, if water and carbs aren't working for her, then she has to drink more/eat more. Definitely as much water as alcohol, if not more (even though you always have to pee!). Keep crackers or noodles or bread handy and eat not only before you drink, but also during.

Good luck to your friend!

stop drinking earlier that usual, take the Advil, plus a multi-vitamin and a few glasses of water before going to bed.

- don't mix beer and hard liquor in one night

- drink clear hard liquors (vodka, gin, light rum) instead of colored hard liquors (whiskey, brandy, scotch)

- drink plenty of water to keep hydrated

- eat a few light snacks (but not a heavy meal) throughout the night to absorb the alcohol
