I recently got my first tattoo this past weekend, and all I can say is RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH! I just typed in what I wanted to find on yahoo or google, and looked at the pictures they had. But as you will probably find out, don't get something so detailed, because then they would have to make the tattoo bigger then you probably want it. Beware of people who say "yeah I'll do that detailed of a tattoo, that small size that you want." The tattoo will begin to blob together in a few years and won't look good. These are people just wanting to take your money and not thinking of your happiness in 5 years. What do they care? They got your money 5 years ago. Also keep in mind the tattoo parlor you plan on getting it at, they most likely have a book full of butterflies that they have done, because it is a common tattoo. Good Luck! And as for those people making negative comments about tattoos, ignore them. Yes you'll feel clean after you take a shower. A Tattoo is a sense of you (or it's supposed to be). It's removable, a little pricey, but I'm sure some of those snobby people making it sound so demeaning, can afford it. And there's always the option of covering it with something better.

ok you said that you want a butterfly, and you want something unique since yeah, just a single butteffly down there is tacky tome. Why don't you pick a few things you like, like butterflies and stars perhaps and make a tattoo out of that, going across the bottom in a design that has a few things in it other then just one thing, it will cost close to the same and maybe just a bit more time, but it will ahve more things you like, or have ur name with butterflies on the edges but have ur name in really adorable lettering.
the best thing to do it do research on the places you want to go to and see what they can do for you, if they ahve time, the tattoo shop will be more then glad to help you out with ur decision

If you liked the idea of a butterfly, why are you letting what people on Yahoo say distract you? It sounds to me like you aren't ready for a tattoo at all. Do some deep thinking before "take the plunge" and make sure you are really doing the right thing (with the right image) for yourself. A tattoo lasts forever.

it's even less creative to go online and ask complete strangers for ideas. i'm not trying to crack slick, i'm just being honest. and you said it yourself, it's for life. so you should really think about it. some people (even myself sometimes) sit on ideas they have for years before getting them inked, that way you know it's for reals and that you really want it. think of some things that appeal to you. whether it's something meaningful and that will remind you of a period in your life, or even if it's just something you really are passionate about (ie: say you're going to school to be a doctor, you could get a tattoo of a stethoscope or something like that) just make sure it's it's unique to YOU. and if you really love butterflies then i say go for it if it's something significant to you. the last thing you wanna do is listen to what other people have to say. trust your instincts, get tattoos for the right reason: youself. they should make you feel good, not everyone else. just make sure you do your research as far as which artist you get it done by and how clean the shop is, etc. don't look for the cheapest way out either. "good tattoos ain't cheap and cheap tattoos ain't good". good luck!

First of all you should tell your age because if you are 18-25 and have a nice body then tattoos on the lower back are sexy. But I do not think that if you do not have a nice body think of putting it somewhere else some place that you might want to show off more like a leg because if I was bigger I would not want to show off my back a lot because people can really see love handles from the back. Then I think butterflys are ok if you make it unique but personally I would do something like a dragonfly I have my name done in really fancy writing on my back. You could do something like that. But never never ever get someone elses name tatooed on your body unless they are children of yours dead relatives that meant alot to you or living relatives that mean alot to you and are going to stay your relatives no matter what. Because guys or girls can just leave and friends can stop being friends but in the end it is really about what you want.

What ever it is you get make sure it means something to you. My tattoos are for my sorority and my family. Don't do it because it seems like the cool thing to do. Like you said it is for life and you will have to live with it forever. If you really want a butterfly then get it.

You are correct it is for life so make it something you can live with. There's nothing wrong with a butterfly especially if it's what you like. Take your own sample to the artist so he/she knows exactly what you want. (I personally like butterfly's for shoulders and roses on breasts.) Above all don't get the rear end of a mouse on your naval.
Another neat one is the man in the moon (face profile in a circle)

you need to do something that has some actual meaning to u because you don't want to do some randomn design that's cool at the time and then regret it later because it's no longer a "cool" design....is there anything in your life that's meaningful enough for you to create your own tattoo? Might be a butterfly, might not...

Because you'll have it for life get what you want! A butterfly is something you will never regret even when you're in your 90's. Or how about a heart? A flower? A small hummingbird? Just keep it small. Enjoy.

I totally agree with doomed and FRENCHIE LOVER. You are the only one who realy knows you, be patient even if it takes a couple of years or more to decide what design you want. A tattoo is FOREVER! and thats what your tattoo should symbolize! I thought about getting a tattoo around 10 years ago, it wasn't till about 5 years ago i decided what I wanted and what area of my body i wanted it. It had even more meaning to me because my son designed it! And I got it done, and I love it!
Also why does it matter what others want. Its Your Body, Your choice of design. Butterfly or not, get what YOU want. ITS FOREVER!
