I first want to thank all of you who answered my question of the sleeping puppy. I need to get him his shots. when we got him at 9 week old we did not know that the original owners should have given him shots but they said that they would give us the list of shot he needs to take. and they never gave it. i want to know what shots he should take apart from the mandatory rabies shot. i called the vet and she named a number of shots. but i want to know which are the ones he must take. Thank you for your imput.

The puppy shots are generally started around 7 weeks and are given every 3-4 weeks thereafter for a total of 3 or 4 puppy combo shots. There are a variety of preventative shots and medications available and your pup may or may not need them depending on where you live and how much exposure your dog will have to such things as other dogs, parks, wooded areas, etc. or areas heavily infested with mosquitoes, fleas or ticks.

DISTEMPER
HEARTWORM
KENNEL COUGH
LEPTOSPIROSIS
LYMES DISEASE
CANINE HEPATITIS
RABIES -
PARVOVIRUS
CORONAVIRUS
GIARDA
COCCIDIA

Distemper/parvo and hepatitis(adenovirus-2) are the only vaccinations she needs. She should have vaccinations at 9 weeks, 13 weeks and 17 weeks (it's usually 8, 12 & 16). After 16 weeks she should have her rabies.
Unless you live in an area where parainfluenza and leptospirosis is an issue you don't need these included in your vaccine.
You do NOT need nor is it recommended to give adenovirus-1, coronavirus or giardia.

I suggest you check with the AAHA, AVMA sites and see the current protocol for vaccinations. Also if you can check out the November 2006 issue of the Whole Dog Journal there is an excellant article on vacciantions. Also look up Dr. Jean Dodds and Dr. Ron Schultz studies on vacciantions. These new protocols have now been adopted by all 27 vet schools in addition to the AVMA and AAHA.

Vaccinations should never be given younger then 8 weeks as they interfer with natural immunity and can cause future problems with vaccines.

After your puppy is 6 months old it will need to be given a heartworm test and then put on a monthly preventative. Depending on where you live you may only need to give heartworm preventative from May - Oct or year round.
Once the initial puppy series is complete at 16 - 17 weeks you won't need any more vaccinations for a year then you will booster the vaccinations you had...After that distemper/parvo and rabies is good for 3 years.

Rabies at about 4 months
Most vets give a puppy booster shot like
DHLPPCA or some combination like it.
It covers
Distemper
Hepatitis
Leptosporosis
Parvo
Parainfluenza
Corona virus
Adeno virus
Depending on what area you live in the vet will use something like this but the combo needs for where you live.
It differs with area as the diseases for pups differ by area.
I consider all of the ones listed above as must have along with Kennel Cough.

I think the first shot you need to get your puppy is the puppy booster combo. It has like 5 shots in one. The rabies does not need to be done until they are 4 months old. That is the only shot I had to get for my puppy. They have to be taken back like every 3 weeks until 4 months. Goodluck!

Well, a puppy cannot have rabies shot till there atleast a year old but what they should have given him at abt 5 wks was his boosters and a wormer followed by what you would give him at 12wks normally Parvo and Distemper shots.

If you have a good vet, they will usually give them their puppy shots all over again. My puppy was up to date on hers but they re did all of them just to be certain.

call your vet, they will be able to tell you all about the kinds of shots that your new baby needs, he diffinately needs the parvo vaccination because it is very deadly especially to little puppies. Good luck.
