There are many Bibles like you described and they are called Parallel Bibles.
One side has King James and the other has a more modern translation. These Bibles can be found in any Christian Bookstore!

Buy a "companion Bible" - scripture written on the left side of the page, and although on the right side its not exactly what you would call "laymens terms", but it gives more info on every single verse; also, It has a large appendex section, which covers all kinds of things, like explaining what idioms (sayings) are used, so you understand what you are reading - lots more, too much to write here - its one of the tools I feel any Bible student must have.
Another great tool is the Strongs Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, which gives each and every word written in the King James, and then whether it be written in the manuscripts in Hebrew, Greek, or Chaldee (ancient syriac) it will tell you , and give you the full translation of the word as it was meant, so you won't get tripped up on translation errors. But the Companion Bible is what i think you may really be looking for mostly - Hey, when you get it, you will find out things written in Scripture that you had no idea were even in there - and normally not taught in the churches of today, even though Its Gods Word. Amazing.

You're in search of a parallel bible. The best one would be the King James Version paralleled with the Amplified or New King James version bible.

Go to any Christian book store or even Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You should be able to find one.

The life application study Bible. New Living Translation.
It is a Bible and concordance in one book. Try a Christian Book Store. If they don't have one, I am sure that they will order one for you.
Tyndale House Publishers, inc.

Check in to a cheap motel, and look in the night stand. There should be one right next to the instructions on how to operate the 25 cent vibrating bed.
