I have a Nikon Coolpix 4300 digital camera. I am havng trouble when I take photos of people. The flash seems to be so intense that they almost always close their eyes. I'm new to using this camera, so any help would be really appreciated. I've tried not using the flash, but then they photo turns out really bad. Any ideas for me?

See if the camera has a "red eye reduction" feature. The flash partially fires several time before taking the actual picture.

The feature works by causing the pupils in the eyes to constrict, reducing the reflections in the eye that show up red in flash photos.

Using this feature might reduce the tendency for the subjects to reflexively close their eyes when the primary flash fires.

I'm not sure if something can really be done about it. This is pretty simple camera and the flash either fires or not. I have Nikon Coolpix 995 and it has the same condition. However, I've never seen my subjects close their eyes (aside from the regular blinking).
Depending on the condition you can try the following:
1. Put a bit of semitransparent tape over the flash. It will not look very good, but can be actually beneficial as a diffuser. The photos will be better, softer.
2. Same thing, maybe even a bit less transparent, but use the external bug flash and bounce it off the ceiling. Some external flashes can be remotely triggered by the flash on the camera.
3. Perhaps a tripod with a long exposure as a substitute for the flash.

I had a Nikon Coolpix 4300 digital, lost my patience and switched to Canon Powershot A #, and never looked back. I still prefer to do without flash, and the pictures turn out great that way, better than with any flash at all.

One suggestion for the time being, if you don't find a way to soften the flash with some menu or electronic adjustment, you could muffle the flash with some kind of tape over the flash.

I am sorry that is how they flash very bright, My husband has one of those and its always a bad idea to take my picture, I see black little dots for about a half an hour, you can change your camera, I have a Cannon and an a Olympus and those are really good with the flash very soft and I would recommend to change.

first of all, check in the book and see if there is a way to put on a soft flash instead of full flash, most digital camera's have these but i'm not sure about the Nikon because i have a Casio but i would read the whole manual, it can teach you a lot.
