I cannot believe how many people think this breed is dangerous.
I own an Akita and he is the friendliest dog going. He has never barked or growled at another dog and has shown no signs of aggression towards humans. People judge this breed unfairly and I do not undertand why? The Question: Should we blame the owners and not the breed. Is a pit bull vicious or is it the owners that make them that way? If you love or like the Akita please let me know here - Thanks.

My sister owns an Akita. He is a great dog. He is good with some other dogs and LOVES people. If you meet him you are most likely to be slobbered to death. He loves everyone.
He is the typical Akita that I have met.
I have worked with a few in training. They do not excell at obedience but most are wonderful dogs in the right homes. But that is true of almost all dogs.

I owned an Akita. The most wonderful dog in the world BUT he was not good with other dogs. The Akita is a naturally dominant breed which does not mean they are aggressive, they just have to be top dog. Any dog should be under the control of its owner, a breed with the potential to do the amount of damage an Akia could do even more so.
I don't know how old your Akita is, but they rarely show aggression until they are mature. Hopefully yours will stay the way he is.
Of course an Akita should never ever show agression towards people. Mine thought people were wonderful, though I'm sure he would have died to protectme if the need had arisen.
Fabulous breed, enjoy every minute with your boy.

It is the OWNERS stupidity that makes a dog dangerous!

I own two American Akita's and my dogs are the best! I have never owned a more loving and caring breed! Granted, some dogs do have a more aggressive nature, such as rots, pits and Akita's, but if you bring up the dog right, and socialize from day one, you will RARELY ever have a problem! When my oldest daughter was an infant my cousin babysat her while I went to college in the evenings. She has a Rott and a Pitt. Both dogs treated my daughter as one of their pups! (both are male and neither had ever been around children.)My cousin would set her in a bouncy seat while she was sleeping, and if she woke up, one dog would lay beside her immediately, laying his massive head on her lap so she could pull and chew on his ears, while the other ran to get my cousin. He would pull at her cloths and paw at her until she came into the room. My daughter never even had the chance to cry to get the attention! My point is, that every dog is going to have certain tendencies over other breeds, but it is you as the owner who will create and nourish these tendencies to bring them out. IF you want an aggressive dog, hit it ,yell at it, leave it on a chain 24 hours a day and don't socialize it. IF you want a good family pet, Love it, nurture it, make him a part of the family and socialize him everyday.

The Akita's are know to have a little aggression but that's fixable with training. people don't like the Akita b/c they herd so many bad thing about the breed her in the us and around the world so they just assume its a mean breed. You can't realy blame the owners or the Breed, but it's more of the owners falt because of the way they may treet the breed to be aggreesive which would b why they don't like it. Same with pitbulls, the owners train it to be like that. remember Feed the Breed not blame the breed!!

I don't own an Akita but i have two dogs.

I think that most dogs that are mean are that way because of the owner. Some dogs it is bread into them. I have never herd of anyone thinking an Akita is vicious. but I understand what you are saying. I get the same crap with my rott.

best wishes

I think you should blame the owners. I don't have a pit bull or an Akita. But I have met pit bulls and rottweilers and they were all adorable and sweet. A lot of people hate pit bulls because of their strong jaw but so do German Sheperds. No one gives G Sheperds a bad rep because they are police dogs. Blame The Owners!

It is usually the owners of these breeds that are at fault. My experience with Akitas was not a good one. I had gone across the road to get a pair of Akita's away from an abandoned school as they were attacking a cat. Their owner was across the highway on her riding mower unaware that the dogs were across the highway. The Akita's had me backed up to a fence. One was about 5 feet from me and the other about 10 feet. The one closest to me was on his hind legs up on the fence just staring me down. They would of gotten me if I didn't just stand my ground with them. After about 10 minutes of this they took off across the highway home. The next day, one of them was hit on the highway. The owner was screaming at the guy that hit her *****! I then told her that it was not his fault at all, as the Akita's were allowed to run back and forth across the highway. The one thing I don't trust about this breed is that they do not bark before they bite.

Akitas are beautiful dogs. They are protective of their family, and tend to be dog aggressive. Mostly, it is a case of poor breeding and wretched owners that have given Akitas a bad rap. I knew one that was HUGE, 145 pounds in his prime. Scritch his butt and he would drop to his knees in extasy. Was fine with people, but not thrilled with other male dogs. Liked the ladies just fine, though.

I don't have much experience with Akitas. I've run across one or two, but I haven't spent much time with them. I've run across plenty of Huskies, sled-dog types, spitz-types, dogs in that family, and I don't have any particular fear or dislike of them.

Now, when it comes to certain dogs (especially pitbulls and my personal least-favorite--chow-chows), they're just too dangerous to have in public. Pitbulls (Staffordshire Terriers, NOT bull terriers, which aren't particularly vicious) have an incredibly strong jaw, due to their musculature and jaw structure. I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate, but I heard that pitbulls have 5 times the bite strength of a leopard, which hunts and eats antelopes for a living.

It's irresponsible to have an animal with that sort of potential for dangerous bites. Everybody says, "my dog is the sweetest bla-bla-bla (fill in whatever breed.)" Until the dog bites someone. EVERY dog has the potential to attack. EVERY DOG. Sweet dogs, mean dogs, pissy dogs, shy dogs...every last one of them could possibly attack.

It's irresponsible to keep a dog that can do that much damage with a single bite. There are plenty of dogs who aren't nearly as strong and who also don't have such a bad reputation. There are friendly mutts, well-bred purebred dogs, designer breeds, rescue dogs...why risk having a pitbull? Why risk having a dog that could rip a child's face off? These dogs were bred to kill bulls by ripping their throats out. So why risk human life by owning them?

And don't think I'm just down on pitbulls. It's just that they're the most popular of dangerous breeds that should be allowed to go extinct. Any dog could bite, could kill. So why keep an AK-47 when you could keep a BB gun?

Reduce the risk of dangerous dog bites. Don't get a pitbull.
