Music, books, clothes (not much, just jeans and Ts), money, cell phone, camera, maps, guidebooks, snacks, a pillow (I always like my pillow when I'm staying in random hotels)

That would depend on where you are going. Sunscreen if you are going where its sunny. Long underwear if you are going where its cold. And 2 pair if you are driving to Alaska. Always carry an emergency kit with you!!!
