I've always had dogs, but now I would love a yorkie. It's really important that they are good tempered and not too yappy, because I have neighbours who are a bit intolerant.

They are yappy but it's up to you, the trainer, to control that habit. They are good with children only if the child is in the house first. As they are a small breed they are generally frightened and intimidated by children. I have had many Yorkies but I would not trust them with kids. Beware, the males are very serious terrritory guarders and pee whenever they go into another house with a dog or another dog comes into their territory.

I can't imagine any reason anyone would want a yorkshire terrier or any toy breed. Miniature poodles are not so small that they are totally useless. They can be active playful dogs and are quite trainable. On the other hand I have never seen a well trained yorkshire. If nonshedding is a requirement you better get a plastic dog. All living dogs shed, even poodles. Anyone who tells you anything different is either lying or ignorant.

No, Yorkies are not usually good with kids, especially young ones. If you have older, more considerate children, I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad. I'd say kids that are 14+ years old would be good, as long as they are very careful with him.
All small breed dogs are yappy, all terriers are yappy. Small breed & Terrier = very yappy dog. If your neighbours can't deal with a yappy dog, don't get one. It will just cause problems.
I would consider a Labrador if you have young kids. They are fantatastic dogs and are great with people of all ages.

My parents have a yorkie, and he has always been good with all the grandkids. He is a bit yappy though, and excitable. Im not sure if thats a trait of all yorkies or just him.

Well we have a x yorkie and she's very yappy and alot of yorkie owners i know say the same thing. There isn't no reason for them not to get along with children if there bought up correctly, and if the children realise that a yorkie isn't a toy.Good luck

Yorkies can be yappy, it's in their nature.
As for being good with children, as long as they are handled well by your kids, I should think that it would be fine. After all, any dog has the ability to bite.

They are not the best choice of a dog with small children.
Yorkies are a terrier breed. Terriers were bred to hunt and kill small game they can be very tought dogs but in tiny bodies. They do not understand that they weigh only 5 pounds. They will take on most larger dogs and sometimes get hurt.
They are not real tolerant with kids. And they are terriers meaning they are barkers and they are very active and needs lots of stuff to do to keep them busy.

NO NO NO!!!!
Yorkies are children. They are tiny and fragile in size but have the hearts and courage of lions. I have had Yorkies for 20+ years. They will say hello to children, but they don't like to be handled by them. Yorkies don't make good FAMILY pets because they tend to attach themselves to one person. And don't like to share that person. Like all dogs there are bad tempered yappy yorkies too. They don't need lots of exercise etc like other dogs, and prefer to cuddle rather than play. They make wonderful companions. If your children are young I wouldn't recommend a yorkie.

Your neighbours would not be thrilled with a yorkie, I'm sure. Also, most of them are very nervous of toddlers and young children, not a good dog if the kids are young.

They tend to be a bit snappy and very yappy so they probably aren't the best dogs to have around children
