is there a way i can use this cable on other sources all together such as my hd cable box, xbox 360,dvd,and surround sound or do they make a swicther for a opitcal audio cable

You need to buy an AVR (AV Receiver) with multiple optical/coax inputs to accomodate all your needs. Then you select which input you want to hear

since optical is Light and the light is always on when an optical device is powered on, there is no way to do it unless you get a toslink selector switch like the one shown below.
