I'm trying to decide on the best education for my children and I'm guessing between Christian Private School or homeschooling them myself. The private school will cost 2500 dollars per child per year and I know nothing of the cost of homeschooling. I'm hoping to go the route of private school but I worry that its a loss of money that can be saved for college. Can you give me advice? Do you know any good links on homeschooling that could help me understand it?

Private school...

It's a totally private decision, and one I've struggled with myself. Many people are telling you that home schooled children are unsocialized. That was my primary fear/concern when I started researching my options. I've found that for the most part, socialization (or the nasty "S" word, as lots of homeschoolers call it) is a total myth. Yes, there are cases of children who are holed up inside their homes and never allowed around other children. There was also that case of adopted children being locked in cages. That doesn't mean all adoptive parents lock up their children. The socialization horror stories you hear are worst-case scenarios, and most of the people who use the socialization argument are people who have never seriously looked into the pros and cons of homeschooling. Most home schooled children are very well socialized. In fact, most are better-socialized than their public/private-school counterparts because they are constantly interacting with people of ALL ages -- not just other 10 year-olds, or 12 year-olds. Many communities have home school groups. Depending on the laws in your state, your children may even be able to participate in extra-curricular activities through your public school district (I know that's the case in NH where I live).

In regards to your original question, only you will know what the best education is for your children. If you can afford it, feel comfortable with the private school, and feel it will be a good match for your family, send them there. Homeschooling is an excellent alternative, but it can be difficult, and it is time-consuming. The flip side of it is that it's also extremely rewarding.

i-Village has a homeschooling and an unschooling message board that you may find helpful. The people there are wonderful, and can point you in the right direction to gather the information you need.

On the whole, homeschooling is much cheaper than private school is. Private school is great if you can afford it.

There is an organization dedicated to homeschooling, the Home Schooling Legal Defense Association. Their site is:

LOL public school. My mom tried all of them. Private school forced me to go to church bi weekly(which isnt bad but should be my choice) and just surrounded teachings about God(which isnt bad but that teaches me nothing about life). and homeschool was too god darn boring. There are different types of home school. one is you teaching them another one is them doing the work and you have an answer book and checking it when they are done. another one is having someone come to your house as a tutor and another one is the kids do their work and send it into the school and them checking their work and sending the grades back to you. If you are a good parent and stay in your childs life and have a good relationship with them they wont get into trouble. The schooling is pretty much better in public schools too.(depending where you are)

Unless you are prepared for it, homeschooling is tough at times. It is VERY time consuming, and your kids do lose out on some things that you may need to compensate for--band or orchestra classes, sports teams, extra curricular activities, social lives. IF you can afford it, private school is definitely the way to go.

Some home school kids do really well, but most do very poorly. It all depends on how disciplined the parents are in insuring the kids do school work. What is almost for certain is that home schooled children lack the social skills to do well in the real world or when they go to college. There is alot of misinformation that suggests home schooled kids do very well, but is based on faulty improperly administered surveys. The cost for home schooling is generally minimal and most school districts provide assistance and some supplies. If think $2,500 is too much, just send them to private school. For the most part, Children are a reflection of their parents, not their schools.

Private school, kids need to socialize if not they will have a hard time in society later because they won't be used to talking to a lot of people.
