I have 5 children. This is the first time my children have ever been in daycare or after school care. They get along great at these. My problem is, we can't afford to take off every time school is out. But, my youngest child's daycare says they are too full to take my other 4. Their ages are 11, 9, 8 ,7, 6, and 2. They other daycares in our area are also full. What are some other ideas?

I would check w/ other parents in your childrens classes? There may be a few stay at home moms who are willing to sit for you. Especially if you offer something in return....small payment/carpooling, etc? I don't know that one person could watch all 5 so you may have to split them up.

Do you have any family members who can help? I work part time so I sit for my neice and nephew when they are off from school.

It's so hard though! Good luck!

Call the school and ask if they have any suggestions for you. Also asked to be put on the waiting lists for all the daycares in your area. Openings are always coming available. You may be able to get your younger ones in to an afterschool program. Can the older ones go to friends or families houses? At 11 and 9 they really aren't much trouble to care for. How about a boys and girls club? Many times they will have options. Also, if you go to church put out an annoucement that you are looking for a solution and I am sure you'll have a kind person willing to help.

Good luck! SD

Contact your local high school and see if they have a parenting class, or child development class - that instructor may know of high school students who are looking for some part-time babysitting work.
I work from home, and my oldest is now in college and does not have time to help me out anymore. (Her friends are also now in college so they are not available as my day-time back ups anymore.) During school breaks I just can't get any work done with all three of the younger ones at home, so I contacted the local high school and spoke to the Child Development teacher, who posted my request for a "mother's helper" during school breaks. I interviewed 9 students, and hired one who comes in and watches my children while I work during the day on breaks.
The other option might be contacting local churches for members of their congregation who are looking for work.

Good luck!

Consider hiring a group of 2-3 teenagers. My best friend, her sister, and myself often babysat families. Also, teenagers probably have the same days off from school as well.

Ask around the neighborhood or call the local high school. Counselors know which kids to ask or they can post signs.

Good luck!

Call your state childcare licensing department. They'll send a list of people in your area who provide such care. There are lots. Also, contact your local high school and ask for the counseling office. They'll have lists of youngsters looking for this kind of work opportunity. And, call your city offices. Many cities offer childcare with excellent activities for these time periods of no school. And, many churches offer safe, friendly care and activities.

Could your 11 year old stay home? Maybe try family or neighbors. Also, families in your kids classes? Just trying to help! :) Happy Holidays!

Find teenagers 15-17 years of age. They are pretty cheap I know I am and they can watch them while you are away at work.
