1. Take as many as you can handle while still enjoying your year. You don't want to overload yourself with AP courses, but they can be a big help in getting credit for college. It depends on how much you think you can handle.

2. Once again, this depends. Think about what classes interested you in your earlier years. Did you enjoy your science classes? Think about taking AP Biology or Chemistry. Enjoy social science? Take AP Economics or AP US History. It all depends on what you enjoy studying. That's what you're going to get the most out of.

1. I would take one the junior year and maybe two the senior year and not worry about the proportion

2. Check them out and research how the colleges are accepting the credit. For example, most colleges have 2 tracks of physics courses. They will give you the AP credit for the easier track, but not for the harder engineering track. That makes the AP course much harder than the bonehead physics track, and the AP course in physics is at least as challenging as the engineering track, especially if the student gets a 4 or 5. See what's kind of universally accepted. Biology will usually get you credit for the whole series, English will get you the whole series at some colleges, Calculus you won't probably get the whole series, and physics you may not get the series you deserve. So.....at this point you need to research the colleges you're really interested in and see how they're handling the various AP courses you're interested in.

It's an AP class for a reason. Most people are not going to say it was easy to understand. It's probably hard to understand even for those who can pass the placement test. It is meant to be challenging not easy. I say take as many as you can get into because if you are smart enough to pass the test to get in the class and you don't take the class you will be bored in regular classes and you are not challenging yourself.
