hey. i'm aethiest too, but i definently have an idea on what you're talking about. i think that years ago, when "jesus was born" and all that other stuff happened, some of it was true. for example, i'm sure there was someone that tried to lead people, but they already had a leader so eventually didn't fall for all the crap that the new guy was doing (jesus and god). i bet the people also thought that this "god" was such a great leader that he had magical powers. and so the story is started and then goes on.
i think people now know better than all that mythological bullshit, but i totally agree that god is believed in merely to make people believe that if they are good they go to heaven, and bad to hell. people are afraid to take chances and risks, so instead of looking into oneself to decide something, they try to get someone else (god) to do it for them. i don't know if this is what you asked for, and i guess i kind of went off topic, but i don't know. this is what i believe.

I don't really know how to answer this. But God is real, because there is so much proof, a book(Bible) written over centuries, how would that happen with no God? There were huge gaps in time between some scriptures! Then, do you really believe everything came from single celled organisms? Then how is everything made to perfection, the flowers just to be and smell good. How were plants with flowers created from plants? The only need for survival of a plant is sun, water and carbon dioxide. Why were fruits created? To help humans live, God loves us. what about all the perfect science? About the way colors reflect and are beautiful, could that have happened by mistake, the way the light bounces off and creates a perfect color? Did we, human beings come from evolution? well, my opinion is absolutely not. Everything is way too complex for that. If it's not evolution.. what else could it be? A holy Creator. God. He's real.
and it could seem He is made up to give people hope. But if you've never experienced, actually experienced closeness with God, there's no way to actually know if He's real, and have assurance.

That is a interesting question, since there is no IDOL of god. Most ancient religions had images of either half man/woman or half animal, or beast. (Look up Egyptian Gods..) And for most part, the tabernacle was protected by a tent.(It was David's idea to build a temple. Not Gods. But he wasn't allowed to build it, being a "man of war.") No walls. No fort.
Now if you tend to say "Jesus", well YES some do idolize him too much. But again, this is not image of god. (And let's keep the "Artistic paintings of michael Angelo" and so forth out of the equasion.)
=)

ever wonder why the greeks, egyptians, chinese, canaanites, etc worshipped actual statues and idols? The true God is not an idol neither is he just an idea. Ever seen a statue of him being worshipped? how did that workout that way? There are things happening all over this world that point to his existence.

The second commandement given to Moses from GOD forbids idols or their worship - NO, God is not an idol;
HE is real and HE loves you just the way you are. Ask HIM.

God is whoever or whatever YOU perceive Him to be. The only way you will know He exists is to have a personal experience that involves Him..He is the Higher Power that exists in almost all religions.

I would have said "Yes" to your question but ever since God entered my life I'm a true believer. I now see and feel God everywhere I go.

most religious people will jump all over you for even suggesting the lack of deity, but they are more ignorant and dangerous than you will ever be, my friend.
