I'm glad you asked this question. It's good food-for-thought.
If we're doing that, then we're being self-focused, it would mean that our treasures are in what we can gain from Him, not in what we can help the Lord gain.
I asked Him what I could do for Him the other day... but not often enough.
If we would only focus on asking the Lord what we can do for Him today, & actually listen to Him for guidance, then we could help bring someone closer to Him, so that they would become born-again children of our Heavenly Father.
Helping the Lord to gain, to win a soul, unto Him. That would surely be an occasion for rejoicing!

A very good question.

The human condition.....suffering

The cause.......self serving desires

We are all guilty and we ask God for more......

But then .....

How can I be of help Lord...? A compassionate plea to give in return for His compassion...a Noble Prayer.....now that's a prayer....

Your insight serves you well........an impressive question...

Because, unfortunately, we are greedy. We think that we don't need God until things go horribly wrong. It is like only telling our spouse we love them when they are mad at us. Doesn't hold the same meaning when it is said or asked in anger or desperation, but we do it anyway.
