My Staff/Boxer mix always barks at people when they walk by our yard when shes out in the back yard, and she also barks at squirls in the tree for a long time. Since she barks a lot people are scard of her because she looks mostly like a staff, but is bigger than one since she is part boxer too. She is really sweet and wouldn't hurt a fly (well atually she would, but not a person), and a lot of people are scard of her because she barks. What should I do? Iv'e tryed training.

My Pit mix is very vocal too. One thing that helps is taking her for frequent walks and as soon as she gets that stance that I think she is going to go on a barking binge I give her a tug and a vocal correction. Sometimes even then she will bark like she wants to go get the person or other dog and I tell the person she is friendly (because she is) and that I am working with her to train her not to bark so excitedly. Anytime she does I get on her immediately by stepping on her leash and making her go immediately into a "down" position. She is doing much better. Also, when inside, if she is looking out the window, i do the same sort of thing with re-directing her. It seems to be a breed characteristic to be vocal like that. She can be whiney too when she wants something.
Changing my tone helps me too. If I use a softer yet firm AND DEEPER voice when re-directing her she reacts better to redirection. To her, it is like a growl.
It gets her attention rather than adding to the excitement.
Because of the general public's perception of Pit's thanks to sensationalist reporting, people are even more scared when they think the dog is that breed.
My dog wouldn't hurt a person either, unless she though it was going to hurt me! Unfortunately, when she was a puppy I was walking her when an off leash nine mo. old Rottie pup came up to greet her and then attempted to bite her. Since then I make sure she is off leash when around other dogs like at the dog park or at my house or someone elses because on leash she feels trapped and doesn't trust other dogs approaching. So she will nip when they come to check her out. She only bites the air, but again that alarms people so I make sure to tell them not to let their dogs come up and sniff her when she is on leash. I have worked on that fear too with friends and their dogs.
She is such a great dog, very loyal and absolutely safe with children. Congrats on your dog.

What I did was teach my dog a word for barking on command, like Speak. She soon learned that whenever we said Speak, it was OK for her to bark and have fun. Then, since she already knew No, we just combined the two words into No Speak. She's still working on obeying us, but she doesn't bark as much as she used to!!! =D

well you can train your dog to stop barking when you tell her to be quiet. first you should take her into the yard and have a friend or someone walk by....when she barks you should say "quiet" or whatever you want to say and hold a treat up to her nose...when she stops barking give her the treat.....continue to do this until she obeys you with out have a treat to her nose...hope this helps!

I wouldn't worry about it. People are scaird of my dogs too. People aren't willing to meet them and see that they are sweet dogs, so it's their loss.
as for your dogs barking, that is what they do. Would you want a dog that didn't bark?

good luck

if anyone should ask you if she is friendly tell them so far she has been, she likes to greet people with a bark when she sees them
