If a man doubts the truth of his religion, then I guess he has his work cut out for him because now he has to do both 1) and 2). He has to make sure that he has thoroughly studied the scriptures and he has to search outside them for other possibilities. Otherwise, he will not be sufficiently well-informed to either accept and defend his beliefs or reject them in favor of another that works for him.

In a way you could look at it as a learning tool. The more open your mind is to God, that is all the more room He has to fill. Always stay in the scriptures, but it doesn't hurt to look around once in awhile to make some comparative notes.

Of course the answer is search outside. But also, one should defend his religion within reason. Hey, if you can't try Catholicism. A humanist could defend it, and an atheist find it beneficial (in its current reality).

I once had the wrong manual to fix the car I owned and wanted to get to know mechanically.
Reading that same manual didn't help me - I had to find the correct one. That search is not ignorance, and neither is the search for Truth.
Thankd GOD HE found ME.

#2, Hands down. If (s)he doubts his religion, looking in the religion is not very smart.

Only if the ignorant person has some intelligence and curiosity. Curiosity to discover, and intelligence to understand the information.

Why would you need to search outside the scriptures? All the answers are there... I think...

if a man doubts, it isn't ignorance, it is uncertainty.
Ignorance is claiming knowledge of something you haven't learned.

Both. If we're not here to learn, what are we here for?
