I've been looking through some of my old pictures, and when my brother and I have our picture taken we both just stand next to each other smiling, with our arms down by our side. I also do this when I'm having my picture taken with friends or strangers.

I'm going on a trip soon, and I was wondering about the proper way to pose with other people. I don't really want to put my arm around someone.

Pose as you feel comfortable. If you don't want to put your arm around someone, then don't. I you are uncomfortable it will show thru in the pictures.

Smile!

It's ok with candid snapshots with friends or strangers that you stand side by side smiling. Don't cross your arms but leave them down or whatever feels most natural. Hand in your pocket, maybe. If you are posing with your bother then maybe appear to be slightly turned toward one another as if you were talking. You can also vary the height of people in the group like standing on stairs etc. If there is a larger group then some can sit or kneel infront of the group.

I find it helps not to focus on the fact that you're having a photo taken. Rather focus on the people you're with... continue to chat, joke about, laugh, whatever. If you're interacting with someone and engrossed in that, and treat the photo as a brief diversion, it all lands up looking much more natural. You're naturally land up in a position that you're comfortable with, and your smile will look natural too, if you've genuinely just been smiling or laughing with someone.
