syd barrett has just died and he finds himself in this white room, he looks around and sees john lennon sitting at a piano with janis joplin beside him, john entwhistle tuning his bass and elvis, hendrix and kurt cobain all strumming their guitars while gathered around one microphone. he says to john "wow man this is musical heaven!" john nods at a drumkit at the back of the room and says "heaven!" I dont think so mate!", just as karen carpenter sits on the stool and says, "ok boys and girls, one two three, close to you!"

Maybe you told it to the wrong crowd. I thought it was funny! I suggest changing the punch line to fit todays MTV generation: "John says, Heaven? I don't think so mate." Just then Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson step up on stage with mics and say okay everyone lets take it again from the top.

I can understand the youngsters not getting it, but I remember Karen Carpenter very well!
PS: I still cry at some of the Carpenters songs - huge childhood memories tied up in them.

well, its not that it isnt funny. its just that no one quite gets it. i mean there are many jokes to which different people have different responses. jokes which some people might not think is funny, some might think the joke is average, some might think its cute and some might think its hillarious.
the only problem with yours is that it is not clear. why dont you try changing some sentences and modifying it a bit so that it is easier to understand!!

It's all in the delivery, kiddo.
What you should have said was "ok, boys and girls, one two three... why do birds suddenly appear?"
It's the first line of the song and most people can remember that lyric...
