Wondering so he won't get a bladder infection anymore. I'm adding water to the dry food and want to make sure he gets enough. He had FUS a couple of weeks ago.

Hi there...it's difficult be specific with how much water a cat should consume daily. However, cats who have a history of FUS should be fed moist food to increase the water intake in addition to the fresh water left out daily. By mixing water with the food this will increase the amount absorbed. Cats naturally are not big drinkers since they get it from their food (raw meat has moisture). So domesticated cats need to get this from moistened food (e.g. canned).

Weight doesn't really matter in amount of water, at least not to my knowledge. Make sure the cat always has clean water to drink, and he should drink as much as he needs.
I was just saying in another post that those drinking fountains that filter the water constantly and seem like a waste of money, are great and I've never spent better money than when I bought one for my cats. If you have a hard time keeping your cat's water clean, think about a fountain. The water is always fresh and when it starts to run low, you'll know it.

It's best to make sure he/she has as much as he/she wants. My parents have three cats. One has always LOVED water. He drinks plenty and licks it from everything he can. Another one drinks when she eats and maybe a couple of other times, and the third one rarely drinks. They are all healthy; it just depends on the cat. You do want to watch if your cat is drinking more than is normal for him/her, though. Increased thirst might signal a medical problem.

You should check out one of the many pet water fountains that are on the market. Cats love drinking water from a stream, and the water is constantly moving itself through the filter keeping it fresher and more inviting to cats. I had the same problem with my cat getting urinary tract infections, since she's been using the fountain she drinks alot more water.

He should get as much as he wants. He should always have water available for him. Make sure to pay attention to drinking habits though. Drinking more or less than normal can be a sign of illness.

It would be better for him to have more water than he needs than not enough, so if you leave a water dish out and check every once in a while to see that there is enough there, it should drink all it needs. (If is isn't drinking you should take it to a vet).
