TaylorMade introduced a club called the Pittsburgh Persimmon in 1979 as the first "metal" driver.

The term "metal wood" is a trademark of the company.

I think it became popular and well accepted in the late eighties. It may have been around before that but it wasn't that popular before the late eighties.
