As with previous answers, it is a tolerance thing. I'm a whisky fan myself and I can drink a good dram without experiencing the 'burning' effect, but it does take time to get used to it. I used to be the same as you and many others.
Someone also mentioned the quality of the alcohol, this I believe is correct; I have tried cheap spirits and they have felt like paint stripper whereas better quality spirits have just glided down without a fuss, almost like fruit juice!

I never understood this whole culture thing about necking back your drink as quick as you can so your ready for the next one. Each to their own, but I particularly like to appreciate the flavour and experience of a drink.

If you drink for "effect" watch out - you will become very impaired quickly. Don't drink for effect, drink because you either like the taste (sometimes you have to a quire a taste) but the best advice is DON"T DRINK. Leads to many problems both physically and with friends and family. Resist the pressure and have diet coke - you will feel better in the morning and will have less to regret.

you should try mixing with ice...possibly in a shaker. If you are sitting there drinking half a glass of room temperature liquor, it definitely is going to have some burning involved. You should mix it with something and use plenty of ice. You shouldn't be in pain when you are drinking.

Patients my young friend, in time you will build up your tolerance by killing brain cells simultaneously. The result will numb your receptors and you will accept the substance effortlessly.

Seriously, gulp it down? Son, a good liquor must be "sipped" and enjoyed until the last drop! Fools.

some people drink all of the time and are used to it. try to drink something that is not so strong, like maybe a type of pucker or a scnapps. or use a mixer in your drink like cream.
