There are many factors that determine Crazy Cat Lady status, such as:

A) Do you talk to your cats like you would a person and receive answers from your cats that you understand.
B) Square footage can be a factor, but so is the size of the house. If you have a large house where the cats are contained, then your insanity factor lowers somewhat, however if they have the run of the house, then a standard 1 cat per 50 square foot ratio must be maintained, higher than that and you venture into CCL territory.
C) If the smell in your house is horrible and you no longer notice it or care
D) Dogs are afraid to pass by your house
E) You have holiday parties, inviting only your cats

i 'd say the number of cats u have more than anything. I have a friend that had 1 cat when i met her 10 yrs ago . since then she has adopted 3 more into her home and about 10 more outside and she is now the crazy cat lady to all that know her. But, she has nothing else to do with her money so what's the harm and some less better off cats have been saved and now have a decent life. so cat lover or crazy cat lady, u go girl and do as u please, as long as u r taking care of them properly and not just feeding them and letting them multiply u r doing a good thing.
i did mention that all of her cats have been to the vet for shots and to b spayed or neutered and that is a very good thing.

Oh, I know how you feel. At one point we had nine cats and kittens. Now we have one, whereas usually we have at least two. I always thought my crazy cat lady phase would come with keeping more than three... -- and of course it's based on our behaviour, too!
Part of me wishes when I am old, that I have the money to hire enough people to clean the litter boxes, etc. so I could live with 50 cats - I would be in heaven!

It isn't really the number of cats you have, or how large your home is, it's more about quality of care and life you can give them while still remaining a normal, productive member of society.
We live in a 1200 sq ft townhome, and at one point had 7 cats and a dog. We're down to 5 cats now, which from a realistic standpoint is about the most I would care to have at one time now. In a bigger home, and not having to work full time - I might very well up the number again.
These cats are members of the family, strictly indoor kitties, and kept up to date on all their vaccines and check ups. They allow us to sleep in the bed with them, and, sometimes even let us sit in the most comfortable chair!

I have 3 in a 2 bedroom apartment, but that's not it. It's the conversations I have with not only my own, but any cat I see. I'm the only human in my home of 4 and they control my environment. They are the best companions I could ever ask for. It's definitely a behavioral thing.

I would think this is a purely behavioral or sociological pattern. As an extreme case, where sometimes extremes are good as they show the overall format, Simpson's Crazy Cat Lady is a good example. So, it should not matter if it's one cat or 100, even if the amount of cats most likely shows a trait of crazy cat ladiness.

I think it's a combination of cat per square foot and your behavior. My mother-in-law has 3 (and a dog) and she's still normal. My own mother had 9 there for a while (a couple litters on top of each other) and wasn't any less normal than when she only had 2.

I had three in a tiny little trailer. Come to think about it, my roommate and I had three in a studio apartment in 1994. (only one of those three is the same, and I got him as a kitten in 1990) the most (adult) cats I've had at one time was four in a duplex where I wasn't supposed to have any. My cats (that I've had as an adult) have always been fixed before they were old enough to reproduce. I gave away over 100 kittens from my mom's cats.
