You've asked for an answer to a very big question. It is very difficult to reduce a philosophy and an ideology to a few lines or even paragraphs, but if you bear with me I'll do the best I can to satisfy your avid curiosity.
Buddhism then....in a nutshell....whew this is going to be tough even for me as a Buddhist........
We believe in the Dharma or Teaching. The basis of which is the 4 Noble Truths which are
1. In Life there is suffering
2.The cause of suffering is self serving human desire
3.To cease suffering one must cease desire
4.The way to cease desire is the Noble Eightfold Path
It follows then that to follow the Noble Eightfold Path one must develop the following
Morality including
1.Right Speech
2.Right Actions
3.Right Livelihood (killing is forbidden even as employment)
Mind including
4.Right Effort
5.Right mindfulness
6.Right concentration
Wisdom including
7.Right thoughts
8.Right understanding
As well as these, there are a set of moral code guidelines which are called the Precepts. In general there are 5 but some prefer the more strict code and follow 8. The 5 are
1.Refrain from taking Life
2.Refrain from theft
3.Refrain from sexual miscunduct
4.Refrain from lying
5.Refrain from drugs and alcohol
So, by practising the development of these 8 characteristics of the Noble Eightfold Path and adhering to the 5 Precepts we strive for the achiement of an enlightened state of consciousness which is free of suffering.
We do this not for a selfish reason, rather we strive so that all beings are free of suffering.
Buddhists believe several things
1.That Beings include all sentient Life Forms, these Life Forms
include animals and humans.
2.There are several levels of existence....several Lower Realms,
this Realm and several higher Realms each containing Life
Forms of their own.
3.There is no Deity or all powerful God
4.Some higher Realms do have Beings such as Gods and
superhumans who have evolved to get to that Realm
5.Life is a cyclic phenomenon which continues endlessly from
Birth through Life then Death then Rebirth
6.Rebirth is a result of another phenomena known as Karma.
Karma is a phenomena which is a consequence of our
Actions in both this Life and our previous Lives. Karmic
consequence can be positive, negative or neutral depending
on our intentions.
7.To escape from and therefore move out of the cycle of Karma,
Death and Rebirth, one must evolve and to do this one must
attain enlightenment.
8.Buddhists do not preach to attract converts as the Dharma
states that we each should not believe the Dharma but should
reach understanding by our own experience of it.
This is a very, very basic introduction to the Dharma and Buddhist ideology. Do not take this answer as the truth of Buddhism. I am not a Teacher nor an Adept and only serves as a very incomplete guide.
I hope I've helped you...
Peace from a Buddhist..in the season of joy

We believe in the teachings of the Buddha, which are too many to write here but the basic ones are the 4 Noble Truths:
1. Everything is suffering (dukkha)
2. Attachment is the cause of suffering (trishna)
3. You can get over attachment and achieve happiness (nirvana)
4. The Rx is the path of liberation (marga) via the Eightfold Path
there are many texts of teachings compiled into the kangyur and the tengyur which are the actual teachings of the Buddha and additions... not exactly in that order... which help explain various points on how to conduct one's self ethically, understand reality, and work towards achieving our fullest potential within this precious human life according to our ability.
Buddha's not a god, we bow to the Buddha and other Buddhas out of gratitude, not worship. Buddha is a concept, the man's original name was Prince Siddhartha. We don't believe in linear time, the concept of a creator god, and we believe that people take rebirth in realms according to their karma (i.e. hell realms, animal rebirths, heaven/god/goddess, pretas or "hungry ghosts", human or buddha realm).
That's the best I can adumbrate it as for you. Hope this helps. 'Tis far better to look it up at various websites... a good starting point is www.buddhanet.net

I just discovered Buddism and I have to say it's very helpful for me when I try to apply to may life. You should do more research on your own. Go to your local library and study it for your own benefit. But here's what I know about Buddism:
1.Compassion
2.Peace
3.Reincarnation
4.Desolving anger
5.Understanding what makes us unhappy (the best thing I ever learned)

It's BUDDHISM, not BUDDISM.
Buddhists practice spiritual enlightenment through the meditative state of heightened conciousness.
They do not believe in, nor do they deny the existance of God, but often enter a state of God conciousness.
Heaven and Hell are both states of mind, not actual places.
Sin is not evil, just regressive to the spiritual journey.
To have a clear perspective, one must endevour to get rid of your 'monkey mind' -- empty chit-chat.
The soul is reincarnated. Death is internal, never spiritual.
All human suffering is a result of our attatchment to the physical world and pain is a result of our desires making us selfish people.

While I am not Buddhist and obviously have picked out many faults in their religion (subconsciously lol) I have found some wisdom of Buddha that I really liked. Peace and enjoy:
'Oh disciples, there is a non-born, a non-produced, [a] non-created, a non-formed, if there were not, oh disciples, a non-born, a non-produced, a non-created and a non-formed, there would be no issue for the born, the produced, the created, the formed.'

They believe that you live many lives, reincarnating, and striving to be "good" each life. When you finally live a "perfect" life, you become divine, and cease to exist.
