This morning, she had an accident on the rug. Looked redish, but I figured someone gave her leftover spaghetti from the night before. By mid-morning, she had full blown diarreah, and pure blood. My husband took her to the emergency vet, and they could not find anything wrong. She is 14 years old by the way. Being an emergency facility, they wanted $1500 to keep her overnight and do ultra sound & x-rays. The other options was to take her home until our regular vet could see her, which is what we did. She will get in to see her regular vet tomorrow. HAS ANYONE EVER HAD this type of experience with an elder dog like this, and what could it be?? I can't believe they could not find anything wrong at the emergency clinic. Blood work came back ok, and no signs of rectal tumors. Poor Lady, she is old, but always seems full of life!

I can't THANK everyone enough for your kind words of encouragement and hope. I feel terrible not leaving her at the emergency room overnight, but we just don't have the money, and they won't post date a check for next payday (otherwise we would have). I will post an update tomorrow to let everyone know how she did thru the night. {{{{{{tears}}}}}}
THANK-YOU ALL

IT IS SO HARD TO VOTE A "BEST" ANSWER....You all had the best of answers and support. I thank you all. Lady seems to be stable right now, and the medication the vet gave, seems to be working. She's an old girl, but we will give the the best of love and comfort thru the rest of her days.

there are so many possibilities that there isn't much to say;
she could have EATEN or DRUNK something toxic, from rat-bait to meds (human or pet or other meds), plants, flowers, bark, etc;
she could have a perforated ulcer, going thru the stomach-wall or possibly an intestinal blockage that has ruptured a blood vessel;
she could have any number of disease-processes underway, from a tumour to peritonitis or sloughing her bowel-lining.
i'd just give her supportive care, keep her as quiet as possible, and hope for the best... but it is sadly possible that U may lose her.
if she DOES die, please consider a necropsy, as other dogs/pets in Ur area may also be at-risk, and without prior knowledge of a possible fatal threat, no one can act to prevent more deaths.
if her death gives other pet-owners fair warning and saves their pets' lives, it is little consolation but can be a huge blessing to those other families!
the first dogs to die from the aflatoxin-tainted dog-food were sacrifices who saved many, many other dogs from the same fate!
i'm so sorry for Ur dog's suffering - :-(

I'm so sorry ): And i cant believe they couldn't find anything ether. u did the right thing to take her home. my sister trumpetgirl68 might have said something already. we had a 16 year old bichon, and she was doing the same thing kind of too. something shot out of her butt, like something blo ody. the next day she did it again, or twice i think.It was the worst smell I've ever smelled, and i couldn't even stay in the house while my dad cleaned it up. i don't know if your dogs smells.anyway then we took her to the vet later on, and they said they could do a bunch of tests but it would cost too much, and my mom thought that her organs were failing, and was probably dieing of old age, so we just put her to sleep. We have the ashes now. But you said your dog is always full of life. our dog was hit by a car when she was about 12, and it was hard for her to walk ever since. your dog may just be sick and will get better soon. i hope so. and i hope she makes it through the night. Just spend a lot of time with her tonight incase you have to put her to sleep. You will be in our prayers. GOOD LUCK (:

Sounds like cancer of the bowel. You won't see rectal tumors with this. It will take a rectal scope test. As long as the dog is not in pain her age will catch up to her oneday. I hope it is a passing thing. Some times they get tumors and they break from the pressure of going poo and the liquid is red and the tumor drains, so the dr won't see it anymore. Its a good thing when they break. but the color does freak ya out cause you really don't know if anything is wrong or not. Just keep an eye on her. Good luck.

Sounds horrible. This is definitely an emergency and be sure to bring a copy of the ER visit, so if they need to repeat tests (to check for any changes) they can compare these. If you don't have them, call the ER to have them fax the info to your vet.
How about Infectious Canine Hepatitis? Poisons? Foreign bodies? Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency?
Hopefully a full recovery happens. Being a senior dog, this is serious and possibly fatal. Good luck. Keep us posted.

speaking to them did no longer have any effects... you're able to flow the 2nd path. The dogs is an outsider on your components (in contrast to a cat, a dogs can and ought to be controlled in any respect circumstances). You the two seize her and contact the humane society to have her picked up. (they're going to spay her likely precise away) or you call them each and each time she leaves information on your backyard and instruct the officer the place she would be in a position to be chanced on. If desire be video tape her intrusions from the domicile windows so as which you have information you could instruct that it somewhat is this dogs this is obtainable on your backyard and is going after your bunny rabbit. Bunny Rabbit could surely be the reason you could call the law enforcement officials. whilst a stray dogs got here onto our components and broke into the fenced run for my daughters rabbit and scared the rabbit to dying... law enforcement officials have been everywhere in the community searching for this dogs, because of the fact it killed her rabbit and that they do take that severe. (i'm no longer kidding right here... they actually had a guy hunt on that dogs and did get him too).

I am just taking a swing at this but it might be pancreantitus ( ithink thats spelled right) or a liver or kindney problem
I think the wise idea would have been to let it stay overnight since it an older dog but either way
You should look up the breed of your dog on google and look for any medcal problem or diseases that breed commonly gets
SHE is in my prayers

There are too many unknowns to give you any kind of useful answer. I hate to say this, but when our fur family gets this old and a medical crisis arises, it often means it is time to say our final goodbyes. I hope this is NOT the case for you. Spend time with your baby tonight. I wish you and yours well.
(((Hugs to you & your doggy))) in your time of crisis. I am so sorry.

Our doggie had this a couple days ago, I thought for sure he was going to die :(
This sounds really obvious, but did they test her for worms? That's what was wrong w/ our dog - worms + colitis.
Good luck!
