Well actually you don't need an AV receiver. To do this though you must have 3 open audio inputs on the stereo and 2 open video ports on the TV and an audio out from the TV. If you do you simply run the Red and whit audio cables from the xbox and DVD player to 2 separate inputs on the stereo then take the yellow cables coming form the xbox and DVD player and plug them into 2 separate inputs on the TV leave the red and white plugs for that input empty. The take a red and a white audio cable from the TV output plug and put them in the third input on the stereo. That's it your done. Then all you need to do is change to the desired input on the TV and stereo

You need an AV receiver that has multiple inputs and outputs. A standard stereo system won't work because typically it only has one input and no outputs.
