Any bike that actually gets ridden instead of hanging on a garage wall collecting dust is cool. Even if it's a 40 lb. $50 Huffy from Wal-mart, it is doing the job it was intended for, and you're getting exercise and having fun. That was what I had for my first bike. I still don't have a lot of money to devote to my hobby, but now I ride a vintage Lotus road bike. I get a lot of compliments on it.

It depends on what you want. If you want to go fast, try a road bike. If you like going everywhere, try a mountain bike. If you want to do parks and stunts, get a BMX or Dirt Jump bike.
And, DON'T go to wallmart or similars. You don't need to spend a leg and an arm to get a good bike, but you do need to shop smartly, and depending on what you want, a good bike might not be as cheap initially as a wallmart bike, but it will far outlast a wallmart bike and perform properly, while it's likely that a wallmart will not.

Depends on what you are looking to do. If you ride only on the road, look into a racing/road bike, warning if you get one you will not be able to take it off road. I have both, and I actually kinda like my mountian bike better. Dont spend too much for one either! Walmart is a good place to look if you don;t want to spend an arm and a leg.

my opinion - the bikes that really turn me on are the huge downhill rigs with the beefy dual crown forks, thick tires, small frame, and a shock that looks like it came off a monster truck. i particuarly like the cannondale Gemini and Judge lines.
