The Bible says that Joseph was an artisan. Other than that, we don't know. He worked in some skilled trade such as masonry, carpentry, etc. Joseph was from Bethlehem, but he spent a good deal of time in Nazareth, which was a suburb of the Greek city of Sephoris. It is likely that he worked in Sephoris during the day and walked back to Nazareth every night. According to tradition, Joseph was already an old man when Jesus was born, and probably died while Jesus was still young. He was also married before, and had at least two sons, Jacob and Joseph (Jr.?).

If you were talking about an earthly father, Joseph, it is assumed that he was a carpenter, since Jesus was. In Bible times sons usually followed their fathers line of work.

If you are talking about his earthly "father", Joseph was a carpenter. His "biological" father was the Creator. Actually, I think if you want to be more specific: The Holy Ghost "came upon" mary so that she conceived and the Holy Spirit's "job", as you put it, is that of Comforter.

If you are referring to the verse where Jesus said, "I must be about my Father's business," since Mary and Joseph were asking him where he had been, he must have been referring to his Father, God. The part of God's business Jesus was training for was saving humanity.

What a lucky man Jesus was. His father on earth Joseph taught him to build houses, while his father God taught him to build houses that never deteriorate in Heaven.
