Some emotions have a physical basis -- in other words there are chemical and biological reactions that can effect your emotional state. The abundance of prescription (and non-prescription) medicines is proof that one's emotional state can be effected by external factors. Freewill is an internal factor; a factor that you can control. External factors, such as chemical states, can be controlled, but sometimes are outside of your control. Therefore, you may not be able to use freewill to control external factors.
Additionally, I would assert that freewill is most effective against that which we have concious knowledge of. In other words, it's easier to use freewill to effect or change those things we know about. Our emotions also have subconcious sources, or sources that we may not necessarily be aware of in our day-to-day living. In this case we can recieve an emotion from a subconcious source and freewill would not be a great method to control it. In fact, that is why I believe that many people meditate. Meditation is one way to make the subconcious concious. In spending a significant amount of time focused solely on analyzing internal emotional states may help one to be more concious of their emotional sources and therefore exert more control over them through freewill.

Your emotions will always reflect your beliefs. If you believe something is morally wrong, you will feel angry. If you believe something will make you happy, then it will. Use your free will to change your beliefs and you will change your emotional response. Regardless, do not be afraid of your emotions, they are equivalent to the weather. You may wish for sunshine, but you do not fear the rain or storm. Do you? You know there will be sunshine another day.

You can. In any given situation, you choose whether to be happy, sad, angry, etc. It's not coming from anywhere else but you.

you are most likely addicted to your empotional states of being; you define yourself through these feelings (most people suffer from this addiction without ever even knowing it) --- learn emotional acceptance and emotional dicipline (both words are subjective, so you have to define them for yourself)
