I got my kitten when she was very young, and because she was so little, I got her a litter pan for inside, even though I have a cat door and my older cats simply go outside to do their business. When she got older, I started moving the litter pan closer and closer to the cat door, and then finally outside by the cat door and then I finally did away with the pan all together. While the pan was there, she did really well and never had an accident. But now that there is no pan, she's is peeing and pooping all over the house. If I walk her outside in the morning, she goes to the potty fine - but left to her own devices, she simply goes where ever the mood strikes. The whole point of having the cat door is not to have a smelly litter pan. How can I train her to go outside to do her business?

Geez people, I asked for advice, not a lecture. As a matter of fact, I do live on a farm and my cats are not pooping in peoples flower beds, they are wandering 500 acres of pasture and 3 barns. I know that cats are not dogs - but that doesn't mean they can't be trained. Give me some good advice, not holier-than-thou sermons!

I would think that if she'll use the door to go outside to use the pan, just keep one out there for her. Sure, it's still a smelly pan, but the smell, and tracked litter, are outside your house, which is way better than inside. Is there an out-building or something you could put the pan in or close to to get it farther from the house? Maybe she's just not used to having to go out in the "wilderness" to find a place for her business.

My grandmother kept a cat box in her house, but when they moved to an area that had a dry creek bed, the cats automatically went in the creek bed because of the sand. Maybe get some sand and make a pile somewhere and just tell the kids not to play in it....?

get the pan back! Quite simply in life you cannot make living creatures of any kind do your bidding. I know it seems harsh but she is an animal and has creature comforts and that would be her pan. You did away with the pan and so she pees and poops on the floor. She is not your other cats and will not ever be she will do what she wants not what you want her to. Don't be lazy get the pan back and scoop everyday and do it because you love her and you don't want her happy.

Easy, bring back the kitty litter outside the door. Shell be happy and you wont have to deal with her business inside the house. That is a good compromise for the both of you. A "negotiated settlement".

WHy take the kitty litter away completely? I think that is quite unneighborly unless you live in a farm.

So because you have cats and don't like the litter pan, you want them to go use the neighbor's garden? It's people like you who make the rest of us cat owners look bad!

She sounds confused. Just keep the box indoors. Why force her out. Some cats just don't like the feel of the outdoors, cats also like to cover their business and maybe she can't do that outdoors. Good luck little kitty.

Cats use litterboxes, dogs use yards. She might not ever decide to trade her world for a dog's world. Sorry. She grew up using a pan, and she wants it back. Otherwise she'll just pick her own spots.

start to go the clutter field to the door. a sprint at a time..then it is going out the door and the kitty is going in it. Then in the previous you know it..the cat has stumbled on that potty exterior! it works!
