Depends on what you want from your pet. All of the larger breeds can be good dogs, but need a lot of exercise. You need a large fenced-in yard, time for walks, training and time to play with them. Training is especially necessary for the larger breeds, for safety's sake. A badly behaved Shepherd, Rottweiler or Pitbull can cause severe damage. Also, the training can be a fun activity for you and your dog. The bigger breeds are great if you want to play fly-ball or have a jogging companion or just go for long hikes. Pitbulls and Rottweilers are easier to groom than Shepherds, due to the shorter coats. One thing to consider: the bigger the dog, the bigger the vet bill for basics like flea preventative, heartworm pills, and vaccines. Food bills are bigger with a bigger dog, too!
Pugs are great (I have 2). Some issues: if you are very active (want to play fly-ball, jog with your dog) a pug just can't do it! They are temperature sensitive: extreme heat or cold is deadly. Pugs need people time; they are very social. They also need training: they can be stubborn. Small dogs can be paper-trained and that can be convenient if you live where the weather is awful or if you live in an apartment. My pugs will go outside, but will also use pads if the weather is bad or if I am delayed coming home from work. Great for apartments and small homes with small yards; they need exercise, but a small yard is sufficient.
Hope this helps. A dog is a big commitment emotionally and finacially. Be sure you are ready, willing and able to add a dog to your life, and do the research so you get a dog who fits your lifestlye.

Well myself this is a tough one.
I do own a Rottweiller and love the breed. They are very loyal, cute, cuddly and protective. Myself never had a problem with this breed and I have a child that is 5yrs.old and the dog is great with him.
In the future I would also love to get a German Shepherd because they too are protective and loyal.
Pitbulls I wouldn't get even though you are right there is some nice ones I do know of a couple but where I live there is alot of bylaws where you have to have the pitbull muzzled when outside even if it is in your yard.
So it would be a toss up between Rottie or German Shepherd

I would choose the Rottweiler because when they are well-behaved AND protective, they are some of the best damn dogs in the world!
They can be love bugs and family guards at the same time. You just have to put the time and energy in to training them with a certified dog trainer with one-on-one in-depth training.
And NO, the American Pit Bull Terrier is NOT NOT violent!
That is a bias and a label which they do NOT deserve.
It is the few bad owners out there who raise their APBT's to be violent and then the dog gets fed up and takes it out on the little kid next door.
An APBT can be a wonderful dog as well as a family protector.
But I still recommend a Rottweiler because they have a very noble face and build.

And also, the photo of the APBT is actually an American Staffordshire Terrier.

If you have a fenced yard, a Shephard is a great choice. But remember, they are very smart, and training them is different than some other breeds. They are also very proud and loyal to a fault...NATURALLY. They will naturally protect you, your family, your yard, etc. as with this breed, YOU belong to THE SHEPHARD. Be prepared for the dog to be agressive toward people when they try to come in the yard, especially when you aren't home. They are jumpers, and have lots of energy. They need the extra room and lots of exercise. If this is to be a house dog, then I wouldn't recommend a shephard. Rottweiler's...more agressive tendancies than the shephard, pits...unpredictable. Pugs...wheezy, but fun! Hope this helps in your decision.

My favorite of those is the Rottie. They are sweet dogs that adore their people. They are large enough that even though your own dog may be a marshmallow, people seeing it will think twice about giving you any grief.
The important thing is to educate yourself about whichever breed you go with. They all have breed specific health problems that you should be aware of before you invest your heart. Also, think about rescuing a dog. You will be amazed at all the purebreds in the shelter or on http://www.petfinder.com/. These dogs will have been temperament tested, shots given, spayed or neutered, and microchipped.
Save a life, adopt a rescue.

I would go for the pug. Pugs are a lot of work and do have quite a few health concerns, but are definitely worth it. Good luck in choosing.

Get a Boxer. Great family pets. They look pretty mean, they are very very strong, and will defend their people, but underneath it all, they are big sweeties, love to snuggle, cuddle, play, and even if they drool a bit and fart alot, you can't help but love them.
I am biased. I have two boxers-and a three year old. Anybody gets close to my three year old, they have to get through the dogs to do it.

All of the ones listed are very different. You should research the many different breeds and then decide.
