I went through some sexual abuse and only one time physical. But I know what you mean by the flashbacks.... they're absolutely horrible. When you get them, tell yourself: it was never my fault. After you do that, immidiately stop thinking about what happened. Take a deep breath and say that was the past, it's over. It made me stronger. It's done. Then think about other better things and do something that you enjoy. When I get them in school, I start to talk to my friends or write a letter to my friend or draw or something like that. Try your very hardest not to dwell on what happened. You can overcome it all. You've automatically become strong because of it. Email me if you want to talk! It's blueyedblondej5@yahoo.com

Go to a psychologist/therapist b/c they can help. If it happened when you were a child then it's normal to experience flashbacks in you're 20's-30's. They can help you cope with them until it goes away. If it happened not too long ago then you are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress. It causes flashbacks, nightmares, and it might make you do some weird things, b/c you're scared,(like make sure the door is locked even thou you know that you just locked it).

The flashbacks are awful and keep recurring! They even happened when I was in the operating room for knee surgery, when the nurse asked me to remove the shorts that my doctor said I could wear. I didn't tell the nurse why it was, I was about to throw a fit, but I kinda think she figured it out. It would be nice to know how to get these under control just so I don't take the chance of being committed for throwing a fit in a hospital.

Flashbacks are a symptom of PTSD which is very common for people who've been abused. If the flashbacks are making it hard to function you may want to find a therapist who works with survivors of abuse so that you can work on ways to come to terms with things that happened and learn coping skills on ways to deal with stress and anxiety.
Here's a very good webpage that offers advice on coping with flashbacks;

Best of luck to you, take care :)

I am sorry to say, but you may have flashbacks like this your whole life. Try and do some fun stuff with your time to get your mind off these things, and move forward. Oprah was abused and she decided to have a talk show, look where she is now!

I was attacked I see a counselor to help me work threw it and I take medication that helps me to function every day.
Some thing my counselor told me is that when I was attacked, it was so terrible that my brain could not process it all, so it stored it away some place. Now it is like letting me know it is time to work on figuring it out. It is hard work and not easy to do. But with the right kind of help you will over come it. Just think about all you've lived through already.
