Whipped cream is exactly that...light or heavy whipping cream that has been whipped until it is stable, usually with sugar added. You can buy it in the store pre-whipped, but if you have a mixer at home, you really should make your own...it is that much better.
Whipped topping is an artificial product that has been formulated to look, feel, and taste a lot like whipped cream, but with a much longer shelf life, and to remain stable after being frozen. It contains a lot of "industrial ingredients", and really can't be made at home without a chemistry set.

Whipped Cream is the liquid stuff (that can be used to make whipped topping) it is usually used in recipes. and it tastes really bad if you drink it strait from the bottle/carton
whipped topping is used to top things off and it tastes a lot better!

Whipped cream is better! But, when you are in a hurry, or need something with lower fat, Whipped Topping is great stuff.

Whipped topping isn't even in the dairy group usually... although it is put on desserts just the same.
Whipped cream is just that... whipped cream... often with sugar added.
