I agree with pit bull , I am a bus driver myself and know that some service are terrible, but the bottom line is money if it a commercial service. But can I ask you all a favour, sometimes we Drivers are stuck in traffic are broken down etc etc. but it is money again, they only put the bare minimum of buses/drivers on not like the old days when we had spare buses/drivers just sitting around just in case

The favour is , next time the bus is late or missing please don't take it out on the driver.
I always use this analogy, when my doctor is 20 Min's late in seeing me I don,t walk in and say "where have you been w**ker" so why do people think it ok to say it to a bus driver, I spent 5 years working behind a shop counter and it did not happen once, now its probably a daily occurrence.

Bus Users UK. Email: enquiries@bususers.org. They are prepared to take forward serious complaints - but make sure you have a strong case. If it is the case that a bus company is failing to operate buses in accordance with its service registration (e.g. not running at all, not serving the correct route, running consistently late/early) then you need to contact The Traffic Commisioners, the government agency responsible for the administration of bus services. If you google 'notices and proceedings' this will help you to locate their website.

How do you define poor service? Is it the vehicle, the driver, or the frequency of the timetable?
Since deregulation in most of the UK bus services are operated in the same way as any other commercial venture....to make a profit for its shareholders. No profit = no service.
Try your local newspaper, bad publicity usually gets some sort of response, but don't expect too much.

It depends on where in the country you are.

If it's London, the first point of contact is London Buses Customer Services, 84 Eccleston Square, LONDON, SW1V 1PX.

If you're not happy with their response, your next port of call is London TravelWatch, 6 Middle Street, LONDON, EC1A 7JA.

Outside London, the first port of call is the bus company themselves.

After that, your next point of call is one (or more) of The Bus Appeals Body, the local authority or the Traffic Commissioners. Full contact details via the link below.

What is the point?

Our local bus company have big smelly 40 seaters and more often than not only have about two or three pasengers.

They are being paid for by subsidies so they really don't give a damm.

Call the company and ask for Customer Relations and talk to them first and advice them that you will try else where if you dont get results with them, get a name and title of the person you speak to, if that doesnt work heck try the local newspaper and maybe that will get the bus company... and good luck.

The Department of Transport has information on the quality of service that passengers should expect. There is a pdf document you can download that should give you some details of ombudsman you can contact who might be able to address your issue to the company and make them listen. Link below.

I would definitely contact your local TV station and newspapers via their websites and send them an e-mail.

Better yet, get several names from pissed off riders like yourself, a form a petition, which can be submitted to news/TV.

If the bus service is THAT bad, get a bunch of people to boycott the bus service! When they start to lose money, they will make changes!

I'm in the USA, NOT UK....but that's what I'd do here!!

P.S. To "Quite New Here".....I can tell you for a FACT, that the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Case in point: On a return flight from US Airways, the baggage handlers actually BROKE the retractable handle from my luggage. Baggage Claim Dept. says "We are NOT responsible for damaged luggage...Read the Sign". I demanded to see the manager. Got $25 free travel voucher + complaint form which I mailed in and got $80 back (my estimate of luggage value) + Additional voucher for $100 free travel.

I would suggest three things,

Write a letter to your MP and copy in the Transport minister
or

Contact the Department of Transport on 020 7944 8300.
Department for Transport
Great Minster House
76 Marsham Street
London
SW1P 4DR

I will guarantee that you get a response from the company then.

Bus companies don't take any notice of complaints about their service's, they have a list of ready excuses on hand like staff shortage.. heavy traffic.. bus Lane's blocked... passengers delaying the bus and the best one i have heard the "driver forgetting the route"..best buy yourself a car
