1. Craigslist: just look for the closest city to you. Post it on Wanted or search the For Sale
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/
2. Goodwill or Salvation Army stores.
3. Call a small carpeter (a man who installs it for a living). Sometimes they have a small stash of it from removing it from houses.
4. This is not used, but it's cheap. Go to a carpet store on December 31st. They need to get rid of inventory. I have done this twice and gotten 12 x 24 pieces that were normally $25 per sq foot for $5 per sq foot.

The only good place I can think of is buying it from someone who has placed an add. That way, you'll know where it comes from, what it's had spilled or peed on it...
Used carpet is not a good idea... too many things can hang out in it and if you're allergic to cats or dogs, you may find you've only bought yourself a problem...
WalMart has some decent priced carpets nowadays... You might want to wait a short while till you can get something there...

Used carpet? YUCK! You are setting yourself up to aquiring a ton of germs. Carpet absorbs, so you don't know what has been spilled on it. My advice is to go to a carpet store and ask to see the remnants. These are the "ends" of the rolls, and they sell them at a discounted price, but new carpet!

I think it is a bad idea to buy used carpet for so many reasons. I think a remnant is the way to go. Go to a carpet outlet store.

Used? careful. people don't always get rid of it because they don't like the color. People will pick it out of the garbage to later find out a cat has owned it.
Seriously, allot of car shows use carpet and later sell them when they are done. Some of it can be rather nice. Just keep your eye on your local paper. Warehouses will usually advertise them.

DON'T EVER BUY USED CARPET THAT'S FREAKING NASTY-TRY AN OUTLET CARPET STORE TO SEE IF THEY'VE GOT REMNANTS TO PURCHASE IT'S WHAT'S LEFT FROM SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T PURCHASE THE WHOLE ROLL.

you should try craigslist
ebay is okay but you never get to actually see the thing before you buy it so you don't know exactly what it looks like
with craigslist you look up people with rugs in your area and then e-mail them and ask to see them
hope this helps!
