So I had to have another tattoo, and I got it last week 12/19/06. I had gotten a tattoo when I was 18 on my lower back, yeah yeah, and it healed fine... Then again, I didn't really see it...
The new tattoo is on my inner left wrist, and the tattoo artist told me after to use some A&D Ointment... I went to the store, couldn't find it... so I got something similar, Aveno healing rub... Well apparantely that didn't work, now, I have a slight infection... put neosporin on it... then went back to the Tattoo shop they said A&D... What is the difference? They both are for the same thing, so I guess I am confused. I basically infected my own tattoo by using something else... when they are the same thing????
Anyways, color is bad, but fixable... Will go back in 3 weeks and have the color touched up... Baaaaah... I HAD to have another tattoo!

Let me add, I did get scratched also by my dog, so it has stayed red. The tattoo artist did say it was slightly infected, but not bad. No Pus (blech I hate that word) Just soreness, redness and it's warm to the touch. Also said no long sleeves... Yeah, I didn't listen there either. Last tattoo? Yup pretty much, lets just get this one looking better!

Adding more details. The Aveno ointment that I got right after I got the tattoo, was the generic, and it said "compare to the active ingredient in Bactrin". That is why I figured I was safe with that. I went to the store and found A&D Ointment, there were two different types so I got the medical one. I am just barley putting any on, just enough to cover the tattoo without smothering it. Also, since I got the tat, I have been using antibacterial Dial (orange) soap. After the dog scratched me I immediatly washed and dried well. No blood, no oozing, just red, but already over night with the A&D, it has improved. The tat artist also told me if I needed to since he was going to touch up anyways, that I could lightly cover it... I put two bandaids loosley over it, so there is still a tunnel of air. Just mainly at work since I have long sleeves on. I am going back in 3 weeks just to have it looked at then will schedule the touch up. He did say a month! Thanks! =)

If you are healing a skin infection, three weeks is far too early to get a color correction - postpone that to 6 weeks - seriously. I make my clients wait at least 30 days under normal conditions.

Many tattoo artists don't like their clients using antibiotic ointments (like neosporin) because people react to it. A & D has a proven track record and if that is what the artist asked you to do, you should really follow directions - someone posted correctly where to find it but you certainly could have asked someone at the store.

Regardless, we give a packet of whatever healing agent we like to use to our clients before they leave so they have something that we want them to use.

You should never take out the jewelry in an infected piercing, if it heals while infected you're closing the infection inside of your body. 3 times a day is over-cleaning it, clean it twice and don't really touch it other than that. No alcohol or peroxide, use tea tree oil. Wear contacts for a while (your glasses probably are rubbing against it which would add to the irritation), and keep your hair away from the infection. Tattoos flake and peel, it's normal. I imagine that your tattoo has black ink in it, which would explain why the skin coming off it is black. Use unscented lotion, A&D is mostly for the first 3 days.

Go to a different tattooist and ask for Tattoo Goo! You can also buy it online. It is the best thing to use for a fresh new tattoo. It's all natural and wont clog pores. It also helps heal faster than anything else! Anything with petroleum bas in it will clog pores and draw out the colors. Also will help clear up the infection!
Hope this helps and good luck!

A + D ointment is found in the baby diaper aisle in the grocery store. it is vitamin A and vitamin D. it is not the same as aloe healing cream and not the same as neosporin. also if your dog scratched your tattoo and you didn't immediately wash it with antibacterial soap... it's not a surprise that it got infected. definitely go get some a + d before you get your tattoo touched up. good luck this time!!

I suggest finding some A&D...it should be a your local drug or grocery store. DO NOT use neosporin....why? I have no idea, I was just told not to. Bacitracin is also okay to use as well as tattoo goo sold at most tat shops. Good luck.

Certin Ointments have "drying" ingredients. Things that will dry out the top layer of skin to quickly for the wound to heal properly. Tats need to heal from the inside out.
