In the reflexes, the strength and the physical control required to control a vehicle going that fast. Similar to Rodeo, right?
Peace!

With this reasoning why is horse Racing a sport? Bob sledding, Pool, curling? The reason is because the person saying it is not a sport has never tried to do the sport. Try diving a car at 200mph with 42 other guys in a pack at Daytona for 3 hours and them come back with that question. I am sure the Horseback rider at Churchhill Downs would say the same. Even though I think the horse does all the work! I bet the rider would tell me different and explain to me why it's a sport beacaue I have never raced a horse!

The physical demands on a driver are more in one race then in 2 or 3 games of some other sports. The g force on the drivers bodies at some races are the equivilant of those on a jet fighter pilot. To be successful these guys keep themselves in good condition especially since their season is so long. One last thing, drivers get a 13 second pit stop as a rest, no half time, no sitting on bench between innings or while some onelse is on the court, could any of you who think it isn't a sport drive a car at 180+mph for 3-5 hours within 4" at times of other cars in a field of up to 43 cars? How about hitting a wall at 160mph? I didn't think so.

A race car driver must possess strength, willpower, patience, and sharp reflexes. Keeping a handle on a car doing 180 + mph is a lot harder then it seems. You have to be strong enough to withstand the g-forces for 3+ hours of racing. You have to want to win but be patient at the same time. One little lapse of alertness and you could seriously injure yourself and other racers. Also, keep in mind that temperatures can go well above 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the cockpit and that drivers can lose 10 lbs. in a race. As a driver, you also have to be able to monitor your cars movement so that when you pit, your crew chief can help make your car better. Speaking of pits, coming down pit road without a speedometer is extremely hard. Without a doubt, all forms of car racing is a sport. If you don't believe me, try playing a racing simulation like NASCAR SimRacing or NASCAR Racing Season 2003 with all assists off. See how long you can go without crashing and/or spinning out.

Try watching a race at Daytona or Talledega. Then picture your self driving 200+ miles an hour, inches from your competitors. You also have to realize that the cars move around allot, and I mean allot due to the air coming off the other cars not to mention the ambient wind. Oh and don't forget the extreme heat in the car. So do you think you have the mental and psychical abilities to drive a race car for 4+ plus hours? I didn't think so.

Driving a car that fast is not as simple as some may think. for example, NASCAR, many people say "Its just cars driving in circles", but its really not. You have to have some physical strength to muscle the car around the track at speeds 180+. You also need to have endurance to sit in a car and stay focused on the race at all times for four hours or more. Lets see you jump in one of those cars for the full race at Watkins Glen and see how well you do.

I don't know what do you think, being in a car for 3 or 4 hours, dodging wrecks, debris, drivers bumping into you, possibly spinning out or dealing with a tight or loose race car, and struggling with that, wearing a fire suit and being in 120 degree or hotter heat, no AC, no bathroom breaks, only getting fluids from a tube that has water or something in it, driving at 200 mph, not being able to see around you, telling your crew chief what the car is going all the time, listening to him and your spotter constantly, possibly having radio problems, constantly shifting, dodging penalties, maintaining a pit road speed without a speedometer and looking at your RPMs, dealing with a ton of other things so what do you think?

Auto racing is one of the most physically demanding sports that exist.Mike Schumacher,Tony Stewart and all the rest have to work out as much as football and basketball players do...Ernest Hemingway said that only auto racing, bull fighting and boxing are sports, all the rest are just games.btw, auto racing is the #1 spectator sport in the entire world.
