I have a BB gun for only one purpose, to shoot stray or mean dogs that come into my yard. I have four young kids and I don't want to put them at risk. I also don't want to hurt the strange dogs, just scare them away. Can a pump action BB gun do any real damage to a dog if the shot is from 10 feet away or more?

Ten feet is way to close, and even a little Red Rider BB gun could penetrate the hide on a dog that close.
That said,,, for many years before the days of bark collars pro trainers (my self included) used BB guns when dogs became rowdy in the kennels. HOWEVER, the idea was to startle a dog,, not to hurt it. For that reason a BB rattling off the fence was all that was needed to get the point across. So no need to shoot the dog,,, just shoot the tree or bush that it is standing by.

Proper gun safty is always the first priority, be sure you know where that projectile is going to go.

Yes, it can, depending on how many pumps and where the dog is shot. If it is pumped up too much it can actually imbed into the dogs skin and cause an infection. If you hit the dog in the face area you could do real damage--blind them, cause them to go deaf or even kill them if you hit them in the right area of the temple. So, using a BB gun to scare the dogs away could cause real damage to the dogs and could also teach your children that violence towards animals is okay. I know that you have probably reinforced the point to them that violence towards animals is not a good thing and that you are shooting at the strays to protect them. Maybe try calling your local Humane Society and report the dogs. Also, try loud noises or water---these both will usually startle the animals into leaving. Good luck.

Use a water gun instead. A BB actually has the potential to be lethal. My sister in law had to have one sergically removed after my wife ( they were kids ) shot her. The BB penetrated far enough to cause presure on the nerve. Should the target turn suddenly a BB would easily put an eye out as well.

are you retarted? Where do you live that there are that many stray dogs. yes you are going to hurt the dog. Have you tried seeing if the dog(s) have tags. Take the dog home and talk to the owners? If that doesn't work call the cops or humaine society don't shoot the dog. What if you hit it in the eye. Does the dog need to suffer because he has irresponsible owners? Besides that dogs sometimes get out, it is natrual for them to run. they are probably friendly.
People like you make me sick.
ps:
can I shoot my bb gun at your kids if they come in my yard. or would you rather me bring them back to you... think about it

It sounds like you may have a serious problem in your neighbor hood, the way you are talking. Ditch the BB though, flat out that is a bad idea for your kids, and the dogs. Grabage lids, cans with coin inside, and a fence is probably the way you should go. Contact your local animal shelter if there is a serious problem. Some counties have elected Dog Catchers, check into it, maybe you could have the problem completly eliminated.

Depends on how good of a shot you are. Don't pump up the BB gun too much and try to hit them in the upper back legs by their hips and it shoudn't hurt them too much but its still kind of extreme especially if the dog isn't aggressive. Most dogs will run if you yell at them. If that doesn't work I would squirt them with the garden hose.

Oh yes it can!! As a matter of fact, hit it in the right place and it could actually kill one. My cousin got shot with a BB gun this summer and he ended up with a collapsed lung!!! Would that kill a dog if it happened to him? YES!!!! You know if you get caught you'll get charged with animal cruelty and abuse!!!! If you don't want the dogs coming in your yard and you want to protect you children, put up a fence.

It can upset an already upset and scared dog. By shooting a dog with a BB gun, you may very well cause the dog to attack you. Please fence your yard to keep unwanted animals out of it.

Sounds like a real bad neighborhood you live in. Do you live in the USA, or some developing country? No community service like animal control there? In some countries, hungry dogs form packs and can be very scary.
