There is a cup at Wal-Mart and the name brand is NUBY. The have a silicone nipple and a no-spill lid without the valve pieces to worry about. My son went on these at 10 months and never looked back. They are easy to clean and the transition to sippy cup is easy because of the silicone nipple.
He will do it when he is ready but these cups help.

I have to give my mom credit for this: Have you ever tried to drink from those sippy cups yourself?? They require some serious suction power! Much more than you probably think! My oldest didn't want anything to do with them because it was too hard for her to use. This is probably the case with your son.

Drinking from a bottle is a lot easier and requires much less effort than a sippy cup. So, what I did was make the hole in the spout on the cup a little bigger so the water came out more easily. No, it wasn't spill proof anymore, but it did the trick. She learned that if she sucked on it, water would come out. The cups we had were the Playtex ones with the removeable "valve", but you can open up the valves on just about any of them.

Hope this helps!

It takes a while to get the idea of tilting the head back and sucking on those things. I would start by offering him little sips of something he likes from your cup. He will get the idea that he needs to lift the cup up (of course, with your help). Then, make sure the sippies you are buying are easy to suck out of. Some of them are so difficult just to get a drip. Then, at first, always put something in their that he loves (juice?). Do it every day and give him time, he will catch on. Also, I found with all of my kids that they were better off giving up the bottle around 14 to 16 months than at a year. It was easier and they were just more capable of drinking from other cups at that time than at 12 months (a few months makes a big difference). Good Luck.

There are semi-disposable cups that have a lid with either a straw or a spout opening (not with a valve like a sippy). There are a little less messy as your toddler learns to use a cup.

Also, Gerber makes a starter sippy with a soft rubber spout and two handles. Try the sippies you are using yourself - some of them are a pain in the neck to get liquid out of and have big, uncomfortable spouts.

I would try taking the plastic sucker out of the sippy cup. That way, when he tries to take a drink, water will come out instantly without effort. After a bit, you can try putting the plastic back in. It will make a mess, but it might work. Another idea is to use a straw cup, that seemed to work with one child that had a hard time with a normal sippy cup. Good luck.

I'm still trying to get my twins off the bottle, and it's kinda tough. The advice I've been given is as follows:

Offer the sippy during every meal. At first it may end up on the floor a few times, but eventually they'll catch on.

Start w/ watered down juice in the sippy. If your kid likes sweet stuff (and who doesn't? :)), he'll want to take the sippy. Then as he gets used to drinking from it more, put milk in the bottle instead.

And since he'll be starting whole milk and discontinuing formula pretty soon, if he hasn't already, you might want to just start putting plain milk in his sippies and see how he likes it.

I would offer you the option of no sippy cup for awhile just a regular cup. It is work intensive at first but when they are used to it you can interchange sippy cup. We always kept a sippy cup with milk or water at the table but at meals let them drink from cups and no bottles anywhere ever again! ;)

Teach him by using a regular cup with a little water in it and have him learn to tip it up to get a drink. That worked on my son. He loved drinking from a cup and then I just gave him his sippy cup and he caught on quick. Also, make sure you put something he really likes to drink in the cup bc i had a lot of trouble and then realized my son hates juice.

Don't worry..besides Sippy cups have been linked to cavities. You're son will learn when the time is right for him.
