I moved from San Diego to Atlanta. I live in Dallas (that's Georgia, not Texas) which I love and I also know that the Douglasville area is reasonable and growing. Moving from LA you will find all places affordable in this area, even in the trendy Alpharetta and Buckhead areas. The most expensive is in the midtown area - especially Atlanta Station. But again, compared to CA it is not very much.

This is a great place to live. There are so many child-friendly and enriching things to do. I recommend it highly. Relax and enjoy your move!

Atlanta is a great place. You'll find a great, diverse, and affordable state. Job opportunities are everywhere. People is friendly and it has a little bit of everything, from mountains to beaches, and historic cities like Savannah, the Jewel of the South. The education system is very good and the weather pretty decent all year round. I moved here ten years ago with four kids and have no regrets at all.

Housing is very affordable the further outside of the perimeter (I-285) that you go. You could buy a very nice 3-4 bedroom home, probably fairly new, for a decent price in the outer suburbs. The trade off is that your commute will be murder, and if you're working a common 8-5 shift, you could be spending 3 hours a day in your car.

Go to Alpharetta. Atlanta is an a great place. I grew up there, but live in the suburbs.
