It can cause both and usually is accompanied with a lot of abdominal pain.

One day you can have 'the runs' and the next you could sit on the loo for hours etc.

There are natural products on the market now that can keep your bowels in a good working order but the best way to ensure regular movements is to look at your everyday diet. Certain things contribute to either ailment so be aware of what effects your bowels and eat those things in moderation.
Being healthy is great but too many fruits and vegetables can lead to very loose stools. Bananas are notorious for causing constipation and wind so don't eat too many of those etc.

The main symptoms of IBS are
*crampy pain in the stomach area (abdomen)
*painful diarrhea or constipation

Most people have either diarrhea or constipation, but some people have both.

Other symptoms are
*mucus in the stool
*swollen or bloated abdomen
*the feeling that you have not finished a bowel movement

Well, actually it causes both - somedays you have cramsp and the next day you really got to go. Usually there are several days
between going to the restroom - It does hurt !!

Quite often it swings from one to the other, and frequently produces copious flatus - intestinal gas - and painful belly cramps. It's difficult to treat, but talk to your physician, he/she usually can help make you more comfortable more of the time.
